Officials Confirm Seventh Rabies Case

Two dogs were involved in an attack with a rabid raccoon in Canton.

Another raccoon tested positive for rabies making this the seventh confirmed case in the county this year.

North Georgia Health District spokeswoman Jennifer King announced Wednesday there was an attack involving dogs on Aug. 10, but no humans were exposed. 

Cherokee County Environmental Health Specialist Glendon Gordy said two dogs attacked and killed a raccoon at a Sardis Circle residence in Canton. The head of the raccoon was sent to the Georgia State Laboratory for rabies testing. County health officials received the positive results last Friday.

Both dogs involved in the attack were current on their rabies vaccinations, King said. The only treatment required is a rabies booster shot and a 45-day quarantine.
