Solar Panels at Cherokee Landfill, Recycling Center?

Siemens is asking the Cherokee County Commission to approve a letter of interest for the company to pursue possible installation of solar panels at two locations.

A request from Siemens to approve a letter of interest to be submitted to Georgia Power in the company's application to install solar panels at two locations will be considered by the Cherokee County Commission during its meeting tonight.

The meeting will begin at 6 p.m., following a work session at 3 p.m. The meeting will be held on the lower level of the county administration building.

If approved by Georgia Power, the solar panels could be installed at the Cherokee County Recycling Center and the Blalock Landfill, both of which are on Blalock Road near Holly Springs.

If it's approved by Georgia Power, the Siemens would enter into a lease with the county to move forward with the deal.

County Manager Jerry Cooper said the county would be paid a land lease while Siemens would build and maintain the solar panels.

Commissioners will also discuss an annexation and rezoning notice in the city of Holly Springs.

The city received a request to annex and rezone 2.04 acres 3095 Marble Quarry Road from office & institutional in Cherokee County to general commercial.

The Planning and Zoning Commission last month recommended approval to annex the property, but recommended denial to rezone the property, which the applicant wants to use for a grocery store.

The county has expressed some concern about development on the property

The commission will also consider naming the outdoor pool and mascot for the Cherokee County Aquatic Center. Cherokee Recreation and Parks Agency staff worked with the Cherokee County School District in its Take The Plunge challenge.

The challenged tasked elementary and middle school students to submit names for the outdoor pool and to submit a mascot for the center.

The county received 10 submissions from various schools and staff recommends naming the leisure pool The Oasis and the aquatic center's mascot as Paradise the Pelican.

After the county commission meeting, the Cherokee County Planning Commission will consider two rezoning applications during its meeting, which is slated to start at 7 p.m.

Stonetrust Investors, Inc. is petitioned the county to rezone 4 acres at 3171 Cumming Highway near Canton from R-80 residential to general commercial for the purposes of building an office/retail development.

Jimmy Waldrop has asked the county to rezone about 7.5 acres at 226 Steels Bridge Road and 258 Steels Bridge Road from RA and R-15 to AG agricultural to allow for residential use.
