Still No Decision on Sunday Alcohol Sales

The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners have till the end of summer to make a decision.

Tonight, the again discussed putting Sunday alcohol sales on a ballot, but made no decision.

The board has until the end of the summer to decide if they want to put the issue before voters this November.Β 

"I'm fine if we don't do it at all," said Commissioner Karen Bosch. But she said she was having a hard time getting around letting the voters decide.

Commissioner Harry Johnston expressed similar feelings at the .

Johnston and Commissioner Jim Hubbard joined Bosch later in tonight's meeting in saying they would lean toward letting voters decide on the issue.

Hubbard stressed to the audience that none of the commissioners were advocating one way or the other on the issue of Sunday sales. The board's job was simply to decide whether to put it on a ballot.

The governor signed legislation last week that would allow counties and cities to vote on Sunday alcohol sales.

Chairman Buzz Ahrens said the county's has indicated there will be a special election in November, and the Sunday alcohol sales issue could be added to that ballot.

If approved by voters, the measure would allow alcohol sales in liquor stores, grocery stores and convenience stores. Restaurants are already able to sell alcohol by the drink on Sundays in many places.
