Towne Lake on Gingrich's Itinerary

The Republican presidential hopeful will hold a rally at the county's GOP headquarters next Thursday.

Less than a week after Republican presidential candidate , the Cherokee Republican Party announced Thursday night via email that the former House Speaker from Georgia will be on hand for a March 1 rally in Towne Lake.

Gov. Nathan Deal, Rep. Sean Jerguson (R-Holly Springs) and Rep. Charlice Byrd (R-Woodstock) will be among the special guests at the free "Get Out the Vote" rally, scheduled for 11:30 a.m. at the county's new GOP headquarters, 1428 Towne Lake Pkwy.

Gingrich's appearance in Cherokee will come five days before the March 6 Republican presidential primary.

The stakes in Georgia are high. Of the seven primaries and three caucuses on Super Tuesday, Georgia's 76 delegates represent the biggest prize.

Gingrich is no stranger to Cherokee. As a Georgia congressman, his district took in southern parts of the county. And he taught the controversial "Renewing American Civilization" course at Reinhardt College in Waleska, now Reinhardt University.

The course, which was originally offered at , was moved to Reinhardt after complaints that the lectures had political purposes, according to a Kennesaw Patch report.

A  resulted in a reprimand from the House of Representatives and a $300,000 penalty.

Gingrich denied wrongdoing in the matter.
