A new assisted living and memory care facility could soon be on the way for Woodstock.
The Woodstock City Council approved a request from Alpharetta-based Woodstock SLP, LLC to rezone 6.63 acres property located east of Trickum Road and north of Popcorn Drive to accommodate an assisted living/memory care facility.
About 4.3 acres was zoned office space and institutional and roughly 2.33 acres was zoned general commercial and the council's unanimous approve rezones the entire property to senior living to allow the company to build the facility.
The proposal includes building a 59-unit 40,000-square-feet, one-level facility.
The council also approved the second reading of an ordinance that would redraw the boundaries of its six wards.
The council voted 5-1, with council member Liz Baxter opposing to approve the changes. Baxter said she was opposed to the changes as it split some neighborhoods in her ward.
The changes include:
- moving a portion of Ridgewalk Parkway where the outlet mall is being constructed from Ward 1 to Ward 6;
- moving the Northtowne and Mill Park subdivisions from Ward 2 to Ward 1;
- moving a portion of the Brookshire subdivision from Ward 6 to Ward 1;
- placing the Magnolias at Ridgewalk subdivision from Ward 1 to Ward 2;
- shifting the Avonlea apartment complex from Ward 2 to Ward 6;
- keeping Garden Street in Ward 1
- placing several commercial properties along Main Street between Rusk Street and Dupree Road from Ward 2 to Ward 1.
Reapportioning the city's wards occurs every 10 years after the U.S. Census is taken.
Based on the city's 2010 population of 23,896, each ward ideally would have 3,982 residents.
The city has to stay within the mandated 5 percent range, which means each ward could have between 3,783 to 4,181 citizens.
The council also:
- approved 2013 Summer Concert Series contracts with Yacht Rock Review for $10,000 to perform June 8; and The Marshall Tucker Band for $16,000 to perform on Sept. 14;
- approved an alcohol license for Habaneros Taqueria Restaurant at 9550 Main Street Suite 120;
- approved the purchase of a 2013 Chevrolet Tahoe from Hardy Chevrolet for $25,709 for the Woodstock Fire Department;
- approved granting Horizon Group Properties a project management fee of 5 percent, or $51,907, of the $1.3 million cost to widen Ridgewalk Parkway between the relocated Woodstock Parkway and Ridge Trail.
- The council met in closed session to discuss real estate, personnel and litigation, but took no action upon returning.
