Woodstock Remembers Sept. 11, 2001

From a 9/11-themed corn maze to a City Park event, locals are taking it upon themselves to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001, at home.

Today marks the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001. While the country has its eyes on Ground Zero and the ceremonies in New York City, Woodstock will be commemorating the anniversary at home.

Here are some local events the city and county are participating in to remember what happened 10 years ago today:

  • The and are holding a ceremony today at 2 p.m. in the . A limited number of 9/11 Remembrance lapel pins will be given out.
  • is hosting a communitywide Service of Prayer, Remembrance and Hope tonight at 7:30 in the Celebration Hall. A mass choir from local churches and schools will lead the service.
  • Patriot Day Remembrance is being held at the at 8:30 a.m. Monday. The featured speaker will be Deputy Michael Sanchez, who joined the New York Police Department in 1984 and served with distinction until 2004. He was assigned as a confidential aide to the police commissioner during the events of Sept. 11, 2001. Sanchez joined the in 2007 in the Adult Detention Center and the Gang Intelligence Unit. 
  • You can also take a walk through  corn maze, which was designed to commemorate 9/11 this year. The maze features an outline of the Twin Towers and the Statue of Liberty. It's open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today, and it's $10.
  • Thousands of flags are on display at Cannon Park. Later on Patch you can watch the Salute to Our Veterans ceremony, which was held after the flags were placed near the  Saturday afternoon.
