Student Perspective: New Year Resolutions

A fifth grade Carmel Elementary student shares tips to obtaining a healthier lifestyle in 2012.

Is your life style healthy? If you answered NO, then here are four tips to help you progress into a healthier lifestyle. We will talk about getting more active, preventing injuries, rest and relaxation, and eating better. If you put these in your everyday lifestyle, it will make you a healthier person.

Getting more active doesn’t always mean track or football. It could just mean walking your dog, dancing, playing at recess, throwing a Frisbee with a friend, and more. You should at least be active for 60 minutes per day. Make sure it is fun because if it’s not then you will probably not keep it up. You only get active when you actually try. That concludes our 1st tip.

Being more active will help you prevent injuries. It will help because your muscles and bones will get stronger. The stronger they are the less you will get injured. To prevent injuries you need to be in shape. You should also wear appropriate gear. For example a helmet, a mouth guard, or chest pads. If you are injured, you always should get a check up from the doctor. It will help because you might have landed on you foot wrong and you might have torn a muscle. If you don’t get it fixed, it could stay like that forever and you would not be able to be active any more. To also help, you should have a lot of rest and relaxation. This brings us to our next topic.

Rest and relaxation is really important because to exercise you need a lot of energy and rest and relaxation will give you that. It will also give you a lot of concentration to exercise. You should have at least 9 hours of rest and relaxation. If you have enough time, you should take a yoga class with a friend or by yourself.  It will make you stretch and it will also help you prevent injuries and reduce stress. Having a lot of stress brings us to our next topic. That concludes our 3rd topic.

When you are really stressed you might have a real feel for junk food. My definition of junk food might be different than yours. It means food that makes you gain a few pounds if you eat A LOT of it. If you stay on a healthy and easy-to-do diet you will most likely lose about 5-10 pounds a year. Also, a healthy diet will give you more energy which will help you exercise which will help you relax. Well, that concludes our last tip.

If you keep all 4 of these tips up then you WILL become a healthier person. And yes, it means you will be fit and in a year you will have lost about 5-10 pounds. I really know that your lifestyle will be healthier and better than 2011! It will also get even better over the years!
