Chattahoochee Tech Police Train on Active Shooter Scenario

The college, along with the Cherokee Sheriff's Office and Woodstock Police Department, participated in a training simulation on Friday.

Public safety officers at Chattahoochee Technical College teamed up with local law enforcement agencies last last week to participate in a day of training and simulated emergencies.

The training, which included collaboration with the Cherokee Sheriff's Office and Woodstock Police Department, took place at the college's Woodstock campus, which has been closed for renovations.

The training covered emergencies such as active shooters and bomb threats.

"This event is giving us an opportunity to work side by side with some of our counterparts in the city of Woodstock and Cherokee County," said Chattahoochee Technical College Director of Public Safety Willis Wade. "While we certainly hope that nothing like this ever happens, we must be prepared for any possible occurrence."

After completing a morning of classroom lectures, officers and deputies from all three agencies were able to replicate a realistic response to the each simulation.

To make each simulation and response as close to a real life situation as possible, volunteers were on hand to portray victims and a triage area, incident command, and even a media briefing room were set aside to replicate a real scenario.

"I am pleased to see such a proactive approach to the active shooter training being conducted," Wade added. "On a daily basis Chattahoochee Technical College is responsible for the safety of approximately 11,000 students and 1,000 faculty and staff members. As leaders we need to be proactive in our planning and implementation of current safety techniques. This training at our Woodstock campus is just one example of how the partnership between the Chattahoochee Technical College and other law enforcement agencies is forming to provide a safe environment for all of our students and community members."
