Cherokee Charter Misses Deadline

The Cherokee County School District wanted enrollment figures and other data by May 27. Charter officials have until June 6 to turn over the information.

Cherokee Charter Academy missed a May 27 deadline to turn over two pieces of information to the  and officials are threatening to report the violation to Attorney General Sam Olens if there isn't a swift response.

Last . He made the request under the Georgia Open Records Act, which requires a response within three business days.

"If our request is not met immediately," spokeswoman Barbara Jacoby wrote in a June 2 letter to charter officials, "we will report the violation to the State of Georgia Attorney General's Office."

Jacoby said the district needs the information because it is in the middle of preparing the 2011-2012 tentative budget.

"CCSD staff is not able to complete its fiscal, programmatic and operational budget analysis of the revised local charter petition without the requested enrollment list," she wrote.

The district will reconsider that revised petition at 7:30 p.m. June 30.

Lyn Carden, a parent working to help found the school, told Canton-Sixes Patch via email that the group was compiling the information as fast as possible.

"We are working very hard to revise the petition and complete the requested documentation in a timely manner," she wrote in a May 23 email. "We do not have a time line of when the information will be completed and returned. The school board understands they are requesting a lot of information and we are putting it together for them as quickly as possibly. We are looking forward to the process and the opportunity to work with the school board on this issue."

The district is giving Carden and other organizers until June 6 to turn over the requested information, which now includes copies of all minutes of meetings for the Local Governing Council of Cherokee Charter Academy and the Georgia Charter Educational Foundation.
