Cherokee School Buses Pass Inspection, Ready For First Day

The Cherokee County School District's fleet of buses are ready for the first day of school.

Officers with the Georgia Department of Public Safety’s Motor Carrier Compliance division earlier this week visited the Cherokee County School District bus garage in Holly Springs this week to conduct its annual inspection of the school district’s transportation fleet. 

Over 400 regular route, special education services and substitute buses were inspected ahead of the 2013-14 school year, all passed the inspection. 

“I was present for many of the inspections, and the officers were very complimentary on the high level of maintenance of our fleet,” CCSD Transportation Director Ken Johnson said. “I have personally thanked each of the technicians for a job well done.”

The school district's bus fleet transports about 23,000 students on morning routes and 26,000 students in the afternoon, about 70 percent of the student population.  The Transportation Department runs 1,500 routes each school day, totaling more than 4.5 million miles each year. 

Each school bus is required to pass an inspection with the Georgia Department of Public Safety, or they can not be used to transport students. 

Inspectors check emergency exits, horns, lights, brake systems and other safety features to make sure buses are ready to carry students to and from school and other school-related events.
