Cobb EMC 'Hires' Boston Elementary Students

Cobb EMC hosted its 20th annual Career Day.

For the twentieth consecutive year, Cobb EMC hosted local elementary students at its annual Career Day event. Participating students were “hired” for the day and paired with Cobb EMC employees who taught them about their jobs and allowed them to assist with certain projects. More than 50 students from Russom, Due West, Timber Ridge, Boston and Allatoona elementary schools participated in Career Day.

Students are selected for participation based on their applications for specific jobs at Cobb EMC. More than 500 students applied for the approximately 50 spots available. Students applied for various EMC jobs, including security coordinator, lighting technician, web development supervisor, master power control technician, customer service representative, etc.

The goal of Career Day is to show students what it takes to operate a large organization and to teach them about different careers. Cobb EMC employees also talked about character qualities important for success in the workplace, including punctuality, honesty and the willingness to learn new things.

“It was a pleasure to host students from across our service area at the 2011 Career Day," said Sam Kelly, senior vice president of public relations at Cobb EMC. "I want to thank them for their hard work. For the last 20 years, Career Day has been an important way that Cobb EMC has demonstrated its support for our schools and their vital job of educating the next generation of citizens and leaders in our community.”

Cobb EMC partners with 10 local schools across its service area, including Timber Ridge Elementary, , Allatoona Elementary, Due West Elementary, Russom Elementary, Dodgen Middle School, Lovinggood Middle School, Ford Elementary, Cobb Performance Learning Center and Marietta Performance Learning Center.
