Accomplishment: Students from Merry Willis’ homeroom class presented a Woodstock Coloring Book as a gift to the City of Woodstock. The gift was an end-of-elementary school project initiated by the students.

Earlier in the school year, the students received copies of a coloring book created in 1996, under the leadership of Juanita Hughes, as part of Preservation Woodstock. The coloring book is available to youth at the Woodstock Visitors Center. The 5th graders decided to update the book by adding new features and storing the content in digital format.

To help them decide on the content updates, the students set out to learn more about the city. They researched its history, participated in a field trip and took photographs around town. The Woodstock Coloring Book was then updated to include mazes, puzzles, games and other activities for children. The content relates directly to the City of Woodstock.

Willis’ class presented the book to the at the May meeting. The students planned and conducted the entire presentation themselves.

Key to Awesomeness: Willis said the students initiated this project voluntarily. Work was completed on their own time, including on recess breaks and at home. Students completed this project in addition to their regular coursework and school activities. Willis observed the students developed some excellent skills in the process, including how to proofread and meet deadlines. They learned how to work in groups to accomplish a goal, make compromises and manage a large project.
