Popular Retailer Withdraws Some Weapon Sales

Question of The Day: Wal-Mart and Dick's Sporting Goods have responded to the Newton, Conn. school shooting. Is it the beginning of a shift in attitudes towards guns?

In the wake of the school shootings in Newton, Conn. some area retailers are responding to the controversy by pulling the sale of some "modern rifles" off the shelves and off of websites.

Dick's Sporting Goods made news Wednesday by not selling what it calls "modern rifles" - locally located in Buckhead, Norcross, Alpharetta and Kennesaw.

The retailer did not disclose how long they would not offer the rifles, according to the Washington Post.

The Post also reported that Wal-Mart has pulled the Bushmaster assault-type rifle used in the shooting was from its website. Although the guns are sold only at retail outlets - including one on Ashford Dunwoody Road, the Bushmaster's advertising presence on the website was removed.

A company spokesman could not be reached for comment in Wal-Mart's case.

Local Patch bloggers have weighed in, both for and against new gun regulations. We want to know what you think.

Is this the beginning of a shift on gun sales or a temporary public relations move? Should guns be available at popular retailers.

Look for them to be back within 90 days...I got mine Saturday. Target shooting is a passion..as is the ability to deflect crime with a strong hand

Gee Rob, it looks like you're spouting NRA talking points. I've seen your very response, worded very similar, on multiple blogs. Gee, let's hold our breath and see what new talking points you get from the NRA on Friday at their long awaited news conference.

got hammered in my Dicks sporting good stock..but thank God picked up some smith & wesson stock yesterday right before close..almost balanced out. do love guns..do have right to carry..is this the unsolvable issue? Would the next lunatic who hates life (and everyone elses) just plow thru kids at busstop with an SUV? Would they use explosives ala Tim McVeigh? I sure feel safer against the thugs with a 30 round clip especially of they know they have one too.

Thanks Jason. Arms definition is certainly a tricky business.

"Gun free zones" --what a perfect place for a shooter to find soft targets! Unilateral disarmament doesn't make individuals or countries any safer. Can anyone name a criminal who will surrender his weapon just because they are made illegal? It would seem better to impose mandatory carry laws (provided of course that you included mandatory training and screening for mental health exceptions) than to take them away from law-abiding citizens.
