Two Woodstock Schools Miss AYP Goals

The Georgia Department of Education released its initial Adequate Yearly Progress report measuring schools' work toward expectations under the federal No Child Left Behind Act.

Two Woodstock schools did not meet this year's AYP goals: and .

did not participate because it did not have enough students. The first graduating class will be 2013.

While the Cherokee School System met AYP in 2010 with only four schools not meeting AYP, the system did not make it this year with eight failing to meet the requirements.

AYP measures test participation, academic achievement and a second indicator. The third group measures goals met in specific subgroups.

The GDOE said this year 63.2 percent of Georgia schools made AYP compared to 71 percent from 2010.

"We have many great schools in the state providing a high-quality education to all students," said State School Superintendent Dr. John Barge said in a press release. "But the rate at which the academic bar and the graduation rate requirement increased this year prevented more schools from making AYP. We knew we were up against the proverbial wall because this bar increases each year, and it appears that we have begun to hit it.” 

The final AYP report will be released in the fall and will include summer retest scores, summer graduates and appeals.
