River Ridge Kicks Off Its Season; Etowah, Woodstock Are Undefeated

Return on Saturday for video highlights of the games.

We are in the second week of the football season, the first for River Ridge, and the and teams are undefeated.

Here's what's on the slate for schools in the Woodstock-Towne Lake Patch:

(1-0) at Harrison (0-1) – Woodstock still has some kinks to work out in what should be a strong offense. Starting quarterback Jonathan Weiner showed signs of his playmaking ability in last week’s 14-10 win over North Forsyth, but Woodstock came into the season hoping to generate some excitement with Weiner and Pryce Washington alternating at the quarterback position. While that system will surely be tweaked in the season’s early going, Brent Budde has to be pleased with the defensive effort from week one after they made 14 early points stand up for the rest of the game. Harrison will be looking for its first win after dropping its season opener to West Forsyth 21-13.

(1-0) at Kell (0-1) – While Walton and Lassiter grabbed the early season headlines in Region 5-AAAAA with big wins in the Corky Kell Classic at the Georgia Dome two weeks ago, defending region champion Etowah quietly went about its business with a 49-14 thrashing of Berkmar a week ago. The Eagles will get a better gauge of their ability to successfully defend that region championship when they travel to Kell on Friday. The Longhorns also had a solid showing in the Georgia Dome in a 7-0 loss to a Grayson team that is expected to be a contender in Class AAAAA. The Eagles will be looking to avenge last year’s 20-10 loss in this game a year ago.

Mt. Pisgah (1-0) at (0-0) – River Ridge begins its second season of varsity football against a high-caliber offense that put up 35 points last week in a win over Cross Keys. Mt. Pisgah quarterback Kyle Sloter is an experienced, athletic and talented signal-caller that has collegiate aspirations in both baseball and football. He helped lead the Patriots to a 26-0 win in this game a year ago.
