GDOT Suspends Labor Day Lane Closures

Georgia Department of Transportation is suspending for the holiday all scheduled and ongoing construction-related lane closures in Northwest Georgia.

Good news for Labor Day travelers: is suspending all scheduled and ongoing construction-related lane closures in Northwest Georgia.

In an effort to ease traffic congestion throughout the long weekend, the suspension begins Friday at noon and continues until Tuesday at 5 a.m., according to the press release.

"The only exception would be for emergency maintenance work in the case of traffic accidents and other unpredictable types of transportation incidents," District Engineer DeWayne Comer said at GDOT's office in Cartersville. "We understand that a lot of people are hitting the road for the Labor Day holiday and we would like to make it a little easier for them to go through Northwest Georgia."

GDOT urges travelers to call 511 for updated information about this or any other construction project on interstates and state routes. Georgia 511 is a free phone service that provides real-time traffic and travel information statewide, such as traffic conditions, incidents, lane closures and delays due to inclement weather.

Callers also can transfer to operators to request assistance or report incidents 24 hours a day, seven days a week. More information is available at www.511ga.org.
