Is Your House Ready for this Weather?

The final chapter in the series of making sure your home will be comfortable and energy efficient this fall.

Now that we have all stuffed ourselves full of turkey and dressing, it’s time to get back to the final chapter on making sure your house is ready for fall. This week the temps will be more like winter with the lows in the 30s, so all the more reason to be prepared.

In the previous sections we talked about the places to check for adequate insulation and proper air sealing as well as duct leakage. Hopefully going through the previous four parts also helped you to understand that the house is a system that’s parts all work together. Kind of like the human body. Like the body, when there is a failure in one of the system in our house, we get symptoms. The key is to find out the cause of the symptom and fix it, not treat the symptom itself.

As I stated in previous entries, some of these issues can be dealt with by home owners themselves. That is provided that the improvement is done properly and completely. Everyone knows the hardest part of doing it yourself is the actual doing part. Keeping that in mind, some things are best left up to the professionals. Some of these projects, if done improperly, can cause more harm than good.

So if you’re not sure, ask an expert like "The Energy Guy". Getting direction from a person with a background in building science is a valuable asset to all homeowners and getting that advice for free doesn’t hurt either. Making the mistake of getting that advice from a sales person or a person that specializes in only one area, can end up costing you a lot of money. So until next time, ”Don’t throw money at your problems, throw knowledge, it’s a lot cheaper”.
