Turn Your House into an Igloo

Houses as coolers?? People as beverages?? Read the article and found out what it means.

No, I don’t want you to turn your house into a structure of ice blocks or turn you’re A/C down so low that you shiver.  The Igloo I am referring to is the brand of coolers.  With summer upon us, you can’t go to any outside event without seeing every imaginable form of cooler.  This got me thinking about houses (yes I am an energy nerd so that’s just how I think).

Let me put it to you this way: If your house were a cooler, would you rather your house be a cheapo Styrofoam cooler that you buy at the local grocery or convenience store OR would you rather it be a high end Igloo cooler (or a Yeti if you like $500 coolers).  Most people would prefer the higher end coolers because they tend to keep the items in them cooler or longer; the better ones don’t leak; they usually have a really good top on them that seals and is very well insulated to keep the sun from melting all the ice too fast; and the outsides of the coolers don’t sweat or condensate.

Now think of the people inside your home as your favorite beverage inside that cooler.  It doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to put your favorite beverage in a cooler that’s not going to keep them cold for very long so you have to keep adding ice.  For the same reason, it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to live in a house that can’t keep the occupants cool or has to run the A/C all day to do so.  Unfortunately, houses cost a whole lot more than coolers so you can’t just go out and buy a better one.

BUT, unlike most coolers, we CAN improve our homes so they DO perform better and keep us more comfortable while saving us money.  Do these improvements cost money?  Of course they do.  And if you spend that money on the most cost effective improvement measures for YOUR HOME, you’ll not only reap the benefits immediately, but those improvements will pay for themselves more quickly.

If you have any comments or questions on how to do this, please enter them below.  You can also contact me @ JonL@theNRGguy.com, via Facebook, or my website.  As always…. Don’t throw money at your problems, throw knowledge, it’s a lot cheaper.
