Are the days of Shamu coming to a close?

Since the release of the film Blackfish in 2013, SeaWold has faced increased scrutiny on its use of Orcas in its shows. The documentary focused specifically on Tilikum, a whale who killed trainer Dawn Brancheau and may have been involved in the deaths of two other people.

In California, a bill would ban the use of Killer Whales in shows, USA Today reported.

"There is no justification for the continued captive display of orcas for entertainment purposes," California Assemblyman Richard Bloom stated.

SeaWorld spokeswoman Becca Bides  told CNN that the legislation was "severely flawed on multiple levels" and that its "validity is highly questionable under the United States and California Constitutions." The spokeswoman also said the bill was a "publicity stunt."

"We engage in business practices that are responsible, sustainable and reflective of the balanced values all Americans share," Bides stated.

After Brancheau's death the Occupational Safety and Health Administration restricted how humans interacted with killer whales during performances, CNN reported. SeaWorld appealed the restrictions in November 2013.

SeaWorld has parks in San Diego, San Antonio and Orlando.

The interesting thing about this issue is that there is no cogent argument to be made for the captivity and display of these whales. SeaWorld knows this and refuses EVERY opportunity to debate. Instead they continue with strategized press releases that appeal to people who have not done any research on the topic.

Let's evolve as human beings. No more Orca shows. Let's move on to the next thing we need to stop or start doing.
