NWS: Tornado Touched Down Near Waleska
The National Weather Service said an EF-0 tornado carved a path of about three miles in northwest Cherokee early Saturday morning.
The National Weather Service has confirmed an EF-0 tornado touched down in northwest Cherokee County over the weekend.
The tornado, which packed a maximum winds of 80 miles per hour, touched down just after 7:30 a.m. Saturday, said NWS forecaster Mike Leary.
The total path of the tornado was about three miles, and it actually "skipped along" the path, Leary added.
The NWS reports the damage was "sporadic," noting trees were toppled over on a path that stretched between 1.75 miles northeast of Waleska and 4.5. northeast of the city.
"In addition to the downed trees, a fence near the starting point of the tornado was damaged when a large tree fell on it," the NWS writes in its summary.
The actual path puts the tornado starting just near Ammons Road just east of Highway 108 and traveling northeast across Friendship Road, Upper Burris Road and ending near Fields McGhee Drive.
Fields McGhee Drive is situated about two miles north of Clayton Elementary School.
