Etowah Student Earns Perfect ACT Score

Senior Duncan Morgan is the only student in the Cherokee County School District to achieve a perfect score.

An Etowah High School student has earned a perfect score on the ACT. Duncan Morgan, a senior at the school, earned a score of 36, the highest score a student can earn on the college entrance exam. Only about 700 of the 1.6 million high school seniors who take the ACT annually earn a perfect score, according to the testing company. The ACT exam, along with the SAT, one of the most common recognized measures of achievement for high school students. Duncan will be recognized by the Cherokee County School Board and Superintendent Dr. Frank Petruzielo at the Nov. 1 school board meeting, which starts at 7 p.m. at the Historic Canton High School/School Board Auditorium. Cherokee Better Than State, Nation on ACT

On average, Cherokee County School District's class of 2012 earned the highest ACT scores in the system's history. Cherokee's 22.7 surpassed state (20.7) and national (21.1) averages, according to data released Wednesday. The highest possible score on the ACT, an alternative to the SAT college entrance exam, is a 36. Calling it "more evidence of the clear trend of rising student achievement and teacher performance," Cherokee Superintendent Frank Petruzielo said Wednesday that the district's average has climbed nearly two points over the last decade. Etowah Leads County with ACT Scores

The Cherokee County School District exceeds the state and national averages with a 22.3.

For the second consecutive year, Etowah High School leads the county in student population and ACT composite scores. For 2011, the school tested 23.2 on the ACT, 2.6 above the state average. The Cherokee County School District also exceeds the state average, 20.6, on the four academic tests on the ACT that include English, reading, mathematics and science and the overall composite score with a 22.3, .1 higher than 2010. The district is also exceeds the national average, 21.1, in all subtests and in the composite score. Woodstock High School fell .1 point below the district’s score, but still exceeded the state and national averages.
