Six Cherokee County firefighters were promoted during ceremonies last at the Cherokee County Administrative Offices located at The Bluffs in Canton. Those promoted were: Erdely, came to work for the fire department 18 years ago and was promoted to the rank of sergeant in September 1998 and promoted to lieutenant in November 2001. After being promoted to captain in 2003, Erdley went on to become a battalion chief in 2005. Hughes has worked for Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services for 25 years. In 1996, Hughes received his first promotion to sergeant. Three years later, he was promoted to lieutenant and in 2003 he became a captain. A house fire that broke out just west of Woodstock early Tuesday morning took the lives of two pets. Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services responded to a fire at a home at 1551 Wildwood Drive near Highway 92 at around 7 a.m. Tuesday. A caller told a Cherokee County E-911 dispatcher that flames were seen coming from the roof of the one-story home. Once first responders arrived on the scene, they discovered "heavy flames" coming from the home's roof line, according to a press release from Cherokee County Fire. The homeowner told authorities that a family of four was renting the home from him at the time of the fire. No one was home at the time the fire started, but a cat and a Great Dane inside the home died in the fire. A gaping …

The new firefighters were officially sworn into duty last week with Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services.
Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services officially has 12 new firefighters joining its ranks. Twelve new recruits graduated fom frefighter recruit school last week at Cherokee High School in Canton. The keynote speaker for the evening was retired Atlanta Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Dan Diehl. Several recruits receive special awards that were doled out during the ceremony: Cherokee County Fire Chief Tim Prather, Assistant Fire Chief Eddie Robinson and Field Operations Chief Greg Erdely congratulated the new recruits and welcomed them to Cherokee County. Jon Bettis will be laid to rest on Sunday at the Mt. Olive Baptist Church Cemetery.
The teenager who drowned earlier this week while swimming in the Hickory Log Creek Reservoir will be laid to rest on Sunday. Funeral services for Jon Thomas Bettis, 17, will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday at the South Canton Funeral Home Chapel. Bettis will be buried at Mt. Olive Baptist Church Cemetery following the services. The family will continue to receive friends and condolences today between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. at South Canton. Bettis drowned on Wednesday while swimming in the Hickory Log Creek Reservoir in Canton, which opened to the public in March. Cherokee County Sheriff Roger Garrison and Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services Chief Tim Prather presented Court Appointed Special Advocates, or CASA, Cherokee with a check totaling $2,680 on Thursday. The money was raised by the Cherokee Parks and Recreation through its annual Guns and Hoses 5K, which was held in February. CASA is an organization made up of community volunteers who advocate for the best interests of children who are placed in foster care due to abuse or neglect. These volunteers ensure that the safety and well-being children are promoted in juvenile court child protection proceedings. They advocate …

No injuries were sustained in a fire that occurred in southeast Cherokee County Thursday morning. Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services and the Woodstock Fire Department responded to the call shortly before 10:30 a.m. of a fire at a home at 108 Eubanks Court in Woodstock. Cherokee County dispatchers received one call from a neighbor who said they saw white smoke coming from the two-story home while a second caller noted they saw smoke coming from the roof of the home. By the time the first engine arrived on the scene, flames were visible from the structure.
