Cherokee Sheriff's Deputies Seek Help in Solving Two Burglary Attempts

Two separate burglaries occurred early Thursday morning, both of which involve an early 1990s model white Ford van.

The Cherokee Sheriff’s Office needs the public's help in finding who is behind two attempted burglary incidents that happened early Thursday morning.  At around 4:30 a.m., a van backed up to the Hobgood Chevron at the corner of Bells Ferry Road and Towne Lake Parkway. According to a Cherokee Sheriff's Office press release, a male exited the vehicle and broke the glass window next to the ATM machine inside the store. The suspect allegedly attached at strap to the ATM machine and drove away. However, the strap broke, and neither the suspect nor the van returned to the location. Nothing was taken from the property or from inside the store.  The suspect then allegedly drove directly to the Sweetwater Quickstop convenience store on Knox Bridge …

GA Marijuana Reform Group Reaches Out to Gov. Deal

The group is asking Deal to suspend the arrest and prosecution of marijuana possession cases.

Advocates for marijuana law reform are calling on the state of Georgia to suspend the arrest and prosecution of marijuana possession cases, according to a recent release from Georgia Campaign for Access, Reform, & Education (Georgia CARE). The call comes after state prosecutors said they lack the resources to prosecute a backlog of child exploitation cases in a January press conference. In Georgia, possession of more than 28 grams of marijuana carries up to 10 years in state prison. Roswell Police deal with their share of marijuana cases on a daily basis. A letter to Governor Nathan Deal from James Bell, director of Georgia CARE, asks the governor to direct state agencies to suspend the arrest and prosecution of marijuana possession cases …

Cherokee Schools Safety Committee To Assess Campus Security

The Ad Hoc Safety and Security Committee will perform safety and security assessments of all district campuses over the next month.

The newly formed Ad Hoc Safety and Security Committee will take the next step in its task to help the district protect its students, faculty and staff. The committee will do safety and security checks of all district campuses over the next month, school district staff informed the Cherokee County School Board during Thursday's work session.  After the assessments are completed, the committee will meet to review the findings and possibly issue recommendations to the district.  The committee met on Tuesday of this week and reviewed documents, key events and safety measures the school district has implemented since 1998, said District Spokesperson Barbara Jacoby. Garrison Won't Enforce Any New Laws That "Negate" Constitutional Rights

Cherokee County Sheriff Roger Garrison joins other sheriffs across the country in heavily criticizing President Barack Obama's executive orders tightening gun restrictions.

Editor's note: the following is an opinion written by Cherokee County Sheriff Roger Garrison. It does not in any way reflect the views and opinions of Patch.  In the aftermath of the recent criminal events, the president, vice-president and many members of Congress are attempting to exploit the deaths of innocent victims by attempting to enact laws, restrictions; and, even through use of executive orders, prevent law-abiding American citizens from possessing certain firearms and ammunition magazines.  As the duly-elected sheriff of Cherokee County, I want you to know and understand my position on this issue. I am a strong supporter of the Second Amendment. In Georgia, as in most states, sheriffs are elected constitutional officers.  Duly …

Concerned, you have put this whole thing in the proper prospective. According to FBI statistics there are many more crimes that are stopped by law abiding citizens with guns than crimes completed by criminals. In fact, according to those same statistics you are 300 times more likely to be killed by your own doctor than by a gun. Let us not forget the real reason for the Second Amendment to the …   more ›

Second Creekview Teacher Charged With Sexual Assault

Matthew Tamanini is alleged to have carried out an inappropriate sexual relationship with a 16-year-old Creekview student.

A Creekview High School drama and English teacher has been arrested and charged with two counts of sexual assault following allegations that he conducted a sexual relationship with a student. Matthew Tamanini, 31, of Canton, allegedly had the affair with the 16-year-old student over a four month period, according to the Cherokee Sheriff's Office. The Sheriff's Office believes at least two sexual assaults occurred on the Creekview campus itself. These assaults on campus caused the Sheriff's Office to charge Tamanini with two counts of sexual assault against a person in custody. According to the Cherokee County School District, Creekview High School Principal Adrian Thomas was notified of the relationship on Tuesday and alerted the district'…
