The new Drug Accountability Court in Cherokee County Superior Court has around eight participants and is off to a steady start.
For Cherokee County Superior Court Judge Ellen McElyea, watching repeat drug users who run into legal trouble come in and out of her courtroom was a "big frustration." Those entering the legal system would go through a "cycle" of being in and out of the court system, without even one attempt to get to the bottom of their life troubles. "They are not really addressing the root of their problem, which is their addiction," she said. So McElyea decided to do something in an effort to break that cycle. McElyea is the presiding judge of the Cherokee County Drug Accountability Court, which is now up and running in Cherokee County Superior Court. Ellen McElyea will serve in place of Justice David Nahmias in a case before the Georgia Supreme Court on Monday.
Cherokee County Superior Court Judge Ellen McElyea on Monday will hear a case at the Georgia Supreme Court. McElyea will serve in place of Justice David Nahmias in the appeal of Morrison Homes, Inc. v. HDI-Gerling America Insurance Co. (S13Q0462). Arguments in the case will start at 10 a.m. Monday. The case involves a home builder who is appealing a federal district court ruling that came out in favor of an insurance company that denied coverage to the builder. The federal appeals court asked the Georgia Supreme Court to answer two questions surrounding Georgia law before rendering its final decision. Cherokee County Chief Superior Court Judge Frank C. Mills III was given the prestigious honor by the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce.
One of Cherokee County's well known public figures has been recognized for his service to the community. Cherokee County Chief Superior Court Judge Frank C. Mills has been named the First Citizen of Cherokee County. Mills, who retired in 2012 after serving over 30 years on the bench, was formally recognized with the honor during the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce's Good Morning Cherokee Breakfast on Thursday. He's the 38th person to receive the honor. First Citizen is given to a Cherokee County resident who has lived in the county for at least five years and has given back to the community through family, civic and/or religious involvement.
