Local Musician Hits the Road

Brendan Guest left for Canada, but his music will leave a lasting impression on his audiences.

Brendan Guest looks at the world a little differently. This young musician from Canada admonishes those in his age group for being apathetic to or ignorant of what really matters in life. Guest spends much of his time thinking deeply about topics most young people never even consider. This mature and concerned mindset gives his music a profound, intense feel. Guest has been affected by music his entire life. Growing up, his father was obsessed with The Beatles. “He thought if it wasn't The Beatles, it wasn't music,” Guest said. Like many musicians, Guest has played music from an early age. After dropping the clarinet for lack of a personal connection, he picked up the guitar. He studied tabs on his own for a while, but found that they too …

Barista Moonlights as Musician

Emma Hoeflinger has an innate love and talent for music and strives to give this joy to her audience.

Emma Hoeflinger, Copper Coin barista and local musician, started out performing in talent shows with her sisters, but later decided to push herself musically. She learned to play the guitar as a means to accompany herself as a vocalist. She knew she wanted to impart the emotions music can bring, and her family was instrumental in her resulting success. “I would be nothing as a musician if it wasn't for the great guidance from my father and his incredible talent as a guitarist and vocalist," Hoeflinger said of the greatest influence on her music. "I grew up watching my father play in churches all over the world. Seeing the way his music filled people up with joy and gave them such feeling simply astonished me as a child. I knew I wanted to …

Inventive Musician Brings Reggae Flair

The Coffeehouse enjoyed Stephen Reynolds' signature reggae style and spiritual lyrics on Friday.

Woodstock Coffeehouse hosted musician Stephen Reynolds on Friday, who wears his Rasta colored shoelaces to nearly every show. Reynolds has a distinctly reggae musical style that is popular with the audience. He said he plays his guitar like it is three separate instruments: a bass, drum and lead. “I go in and out of the off beat reggae style within each song, and I think that change within the song is my trademark. Sublime did it with their music, changing in one song from a punk beat to a hip hop beat to a reggae beat,” Reynolds explained. “That style just came spontaneously to me over the years. I play not only the melody, but the bass and percussion, and that creates a more full sound.” Reynold's rhythms are catchy and energetic, …

Musicians Play Complimenting Solo Sets

Jeannie Caryn headlined Friday night with special guests Tom Flugum and Marc Lawson.

Musicians Jeannie Caryn, Marc Lawson and Tom Flugum each played solo sets during a lively show Friday at Woodstock Coffeehouse. These three artists' styles flowed together well, and the night was a success. Show opener Tom Flugum has been touring local venues with Jeannie for almost a year, and played some popular covers. “Jeannie is a great singer, and we always support each other and look for opportunities to play out," Flugum said. "We have styles and taste that compliment each other, so I was very happy to sit in with her and play at the coffeehouse. The show closer, pianist Lawson, has an EP coming out soon. He performed his originals for the crowd, and says he enjoys playing shows with Caryn. “I really like the way Jeannie interacts …

Pianist Engages Audience with Relatable Originals

Pete Morley, Georgia resident since 1985, performed his piano-based solo set for Woodstock Coffeehouse on Friday.

Woodstock Coffeehouse hosted pianist, vocalist and songwriter Pete Morley Friday night, creating an enjoyable evening for everyone. Morley is friend to frequent performers Kevin Carlson and Bruce Gibson. Morley played at a Woodstock Coffeehouse open mic and decided to come back for more. “It's got a great vibe. Everyone is really supportive,” Morley said. This California-born musician enjoys visiting Woodstock, both for its small-town feel and its nightlife. Morley said he especially likes the downtown scene and has performed shows there before. “I'm an architect by trade, so I appreciate what Woodstock has done to transform the downtown area into a live/work/play community," Morley said. Georgian Solo Act Plays for Enthusiastic Crowd

Talented guitarist David McLeod performed an energetic and enjoyable set for audience members at Woodstock Coffeehouse on Friday night.

Woodstock Coffeehouse hosted quite a crowd Friday for David McLeod's performance, which included lots of rhythm guitar and both creative originals and covers. McLeod traveled to Woodstock from his home in Grant Park for the show. “I absolutely love playing live most of the time. There is no feeling in the world like the one being robustly applauded delivers,” McLeod said. During his performance, he invited Woodstock Coffeehouse's music coordinator Robin Roberts on stage to accompany him. Roberts lent her vocals to a couple of songs, making McLeod's set all the more dynamic. During his early years, McLeod cut his musical teeth on a plastic ukulele procured from his brother for $2. He progressed to learn guitar at age 10, and has still only …

Indie-Folk Duo Delights Audience with Humorous Originals

Dustin and Adrienne Cottrell comprise folk duo 'Tortoise and Hair' and played a mostly upbeat set on Saturday night for Woodstock Coffeehouse.

Dustin and Adrienne Cottrell of Tortise and Hair brought their unique chemistry to the stage Saturday night for an engaging performance. They played multiple, well-composed covers, including some Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson and Joni Mitchell. However, the audience responded most to a humorous original song named 'Argus' after their dog. They said people seem to like 'Argus' because it's so peppy and fun. Upbeat with a positive message seems to be a winning formula. Both Dustin and Adrienne earned Bachelor of Arts degrees in music from Florida State University. Dustin focused on jazz, performing mostly on piano throughout the Southeast, while Adrienne studied classical piano. Adrienne continued studying religion. The Cottrells have been dating…

Music Teacher Plays Solo Show

Jeremy Cochran, member of The Simple Beats, played a solo show for audience members at Woodstock Coffeehouse Saturday.

Jeremy Cochran, Georgia resident for all of his 33 years, grew up in Woodstock and returned on Saturday to perform a live set at Woodstock Coffeehouse. “The coffeehouse is a place where being an original artist is appreciated. Most bars you play at only want to hear covers, and the people are there mostly to get drunk. When you play the coffeehouse you know some people are genuinely listening, and that is golden,” Cochran said. Though he said he prefers to play with a band, he does not avoid solo gigs. “I can rock a solo gig and sometimes enjoy that as well, especially if I have time to practice for it and can embellish my solo performance with some creative one-man- band kind of stuff." He played lots of originals, including some quirky …

Coffeehouse Enjoys 'Jazz Finger-Picking Fusion'

Aaron Gibson played his own originals and some familiar covers for the audience on Saturday night.

Self-taught acoustic guitarist Aaron Gibson amazed the audience at Woodstock Coffeehouse on Saturday with his finger-picking skills. Gibson, Georgia resident for five years, said he originally learned guitar in response to a challenge. “Initially, I learned guitar to show up a kid that was on my bus freshman year of high school who told me I couldn't learn 'Tears in Heaven'. Then I learned it and started really enjoying the guitar." His mainly instrumental set included lots of originals, which he says come naturally to him. “If I had to pick one aspect of my music that I like, it is that for the most part I've never had to force it. If I have an idea in my head and I want to put it to music it either happens in 15 minutes or I simply can't…

Local Guitarist Performs Impromptu Show

JJ Posway, frequent visitor of Woodstock Coffeehouse, obliged other guests by performing an unrehearsed live show on Friday.

Though no show was scheduled for last Friday night at Woodstock Coffeehouse, musician and Georgia resident for 17 years, JJ Posway gladly obliged the eager crowd by agreeing to play an impromptu live show. Posway has played several shows at the Coffeehouse, along with attending countless open mics on Mondays. He is always a crowd favorite, and tends to bring other musicians on stage during his performances. He was joined by vocalist Holli Griffin during his latest official show  Nov. 26. "She's such a fantastic singer, and I always look forward to her playing, whether it's an open mic or one of her own shows," Posway said. The feeling is mutual; Griffin said she always enjoys Posway's shows. "He's one of the most talented people I know. I …
