Woodstock Mayor, Council Members To Seek Re-election

Mayor Donnie Henriques and Council members Randy Brewer, Bob Mueller and Bud Leonard will all run for another term in the city's municipal elections in the fall.

The four incumbents in Woodstock who are up for re-election will once gain toss their hats into the political arena this fall. Mayor Donnie Henriques, Ward 1 Councilman Randy Brewer, Ward 3 Councilman Bob Mueller and Ward 5 Councilman Bud Leonard have all declared their intentions to seek re-election to the Woodstock City Council.  Henriques will be seeking his third term as mayor. In a press release, the mayor noted his desire to see the proposed amphitheatre completed, the expansion of the city's grid streets and the widening of Towne Lake Parkway and Arnold Mill Road were all "incentives in wanting to run for re-election." 'Shock,' Questions in Woodstock as Pope Benedict XVI Resigns

His resignation will go into effect on Feb. 28, and a successor should be named by Easter.

Pope Benedict XVI announced today that he is resigning, effective Feb. 28. Archdiocese of Atlanta Archbishop Wilton Gregory will hold a press conference at 1 p.m. today at 2401 Lake Park Drive in Smyrna to address questions and concerns. Local churches, including Woodstock's St. Michael The Archangel Roman Catholic Church, are not authorized to comment on the news.  "It’s very new," said Meaghan Schroeder, assistant communications director for the Archdiocese of Atlanta. The speech was used to recount some of the milestones, successses and major accomplishments the city saw in 2012. Here's the text of the mayor's speech:  Last year, I started this address by saying that “2011 was clearly the year that the city of Woodstock turned the corner in our road to recovery from the Great Recession.”  If 2011 was the year that we turned the corner, 2012 will be remembered as the year that the pendulum swung to the positive in a major way for the city of Woodstock.  No matter what form of measurement you utilize, 2012 was the best year on record for quite a while for the city. Woodstock Mayor Henriques To Give State Of The City Address

The mayor will give his annual update during the Woodstock City Council meeting on Monday.

Woodstock Mayor Donnie Henriques will give his annual State of the City address during the Woodstock City Council's meeting on Monday. The meeting will start at 7 p.m. at the Chambers at City Center. The address usually recounts the accomplishments the city witnessed in 2012 and makes note of what challenges it may face in the near future. Council members will also consider a request to rezone property to accommodate a assisted living/memory care facility. Woodstock SLP, LLC of Alpharetta has petitioned the city to rezone 6.63 acres property located east of Trickum Road and north of Popcorn Drive. Woodstock Mayor Donnie Henriques and County Commission Chair Buzz Ahrens will discuss the Regional Transportation Referendum.

Before you vote on July 31, call in to talk about the Transportation Referendum issues with Cherokee legislators. The "Wireside Chat," inspired by President Roosevelt’s “Fireside Chat” during World War II in which he detailed the progress of the war while citizens followed along at home using a world map, will connect local elected officials with residents of the region, according to a news release. During these phone calls, residents can ask questions about the projects on the list and follow along using a regional map.
