A last minute comeback attempt fell just short for Etowah
Stephanie Huffman missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer at the buzzer as Etowah’s dream of a deep state tournament run came to a screeching halt at home Tuesday night in a 39-36 loss to Milton. Huffman single-handedly whittled a 37-30 Milton lead to 38-36 in the game’s final two minutes, but her well-defended attempt to send the game to overtime fell just short. That frenzied finish may be what haunts Etowah when they look back at what might have been, but Etowah head coach Bob Westbrook attributed the loss not to what happened at the end, but to what happened in the first half. Etowah managed to get Milton starters Nikki Dixon, the team’s leading scorer, and 6-foot-4-inch center Tori Waldner in first-quarter foul trouble. Dixon picked …

A late free-throw vaults the Lady Eagles to victory.
“With one minute left, the seniors were in.” said Etowah guard McKeinsey Irvin; her team tied at 43 in the first round of the state playoffs on Friday with the Duluth Lady Wildcats, the No. 4 seed from Region 7-AAAAA. “I said, ‘We have one minute. Let’s go! Let’s go!’” Her team responded with an entire minute of lockdown defense. Following a steal, Etowah’s Stephanie Huffman passed the ball upcourt to Irvin who was fouled under the basket with 2.5 seconds remaining in the game. After she missed the first free-throw attempt, there was incredible pressure to make the second. “I was just trying to think about nothing but the basket,” said Irvin. “I kind of zoned out everything else and focused as hard as I could.” Irvin’s only point of the …

The Eagles ran into a high-powered Lassiter team in the first round of the Region 5-AAAAA tournament on Wednesday.
If the Lassiter basketball team looked like they were on a mission during their Region 5-AAAAA quarterfinal game against Etowah, it's probably because they were. With a seven-year state tournament drought staring them in the face, the Trojans didn't blink. Lassiter shot out to a 26-11 lead and never looked back, earning a 55-37 over Etowah. The victory clinches the Trojan's first state tournament appearance since 2003-04. Although it was a three seed [Lassiter] against a seven seed [Etowah], Trojan coach Jeremy Morris said there's no way his team was the favorite, "When you haven't been to the state playoffs in seven years, you're the underdog," Morris said after the game. " And we feel like we're the underdog every time we go on the floor…

Etowah High School will host the Region 5-AAAAA girls basketball tournament.
The Region 5-AAAAA girls basketball tournament tips off on Tuesday at Etowah High School with six teams in action. The early game is a 5 p.m. showdown between Cherokee (11-13, 6-6), the No. 5 seed, and Woodstock (12-12, 7-5), who entered the tournament as the No. 4 seed. The Lady Wolverines beat Cherokee by two points in a Jan. 24 game but lost to the Lady Warriors by 10 in early February. The winner will advance to play on Friday against the 5-AAAAA No. 1 seed, Etowah, who received a bye in the first round. The second game on Tuesday begins at 6:30 p.m. and features the No. 3 seed, Walton (14-10, 7-5), facing the No. 6 seed, Wheeler (10-13, 3-9). The Lady Wildcats lost both games against Walton this season; the first by six points in …

The Eagles will open region tournament play Wednesday.
One of the keys to pulling off a big upset in high school basketball is jumping out to a quick start. Friday, playing against the No. 1 team in the region, Etowah didn't do that. Walton jumped out to a 26-10 first quarter lead en route to a 85-63 win over the Eagles. It was Etowah's final game of the regular season. Eagle coach Don Hurlburt thinks some of his guys may have been looking toward next week's region tournament. "We wanted to come out and play hard and work on some things," Hurlburt said. "But I think we had some kids looking past this one because it was us playing Walton at Walton." Although Hurlburt wasn't pleased with his team's effort, Walton coach Joe Goydish thought his team played one of its best all-around games of …

Here's the scoop on basketball around the Woodstock-Towne Lake Patch on Friday
Here is what to watch for at the Woodstock-Towne Lake Patch on Tuesday: Teams: Etowah vs. Walton When: 6 p.m. girls; 7:30 p.m boys Where: Walton High School Boys Preview: Etowah (8-16, 2-9) will be looking to play the role of spoiler in their regular season finale. Walton (16-6, 9-1) has won six straight games and 11 of its last 12 and will be motivated to keep pace with Wheeler in the race for first place in region 5-AAAAA. Etowah lost the first meeting between the two teams, 70-51 on Jan. 18. Etowah’s strength is in its backcourt with point guard Austin Miramonti, but Walton will counteract that with its one-two punch of guards Karl Cochran and Lanerryl Esters-Johnson. Etowah will be the sixth seed in next week’s region tournament …

The boys completed the sweep at home after the girls won going away.
You might not think that a team that just won a game to raise its record to 6-16 overall and 2-8 in region play should be talking about making the state tournament. But that’s exactly the type of talk that Etowah’s 51-45 win over rival Woodstock on Tuesday evoked from head coach Don Hurlburt. As minute as the difference between 1-9 and 2-8 might seem, for Etowah that one win spans a vast mental chasm between being a state tournament longshot and potentially pulling one upset and crashing the state party. “This was important for seeding in the region tournament,” Hurlburt said. “If we’re the sixth seed and not the seventh seed, now these kids think, ‘You know what, we can win that one game in February and qualify for the state.’ So this was…

As teams jockey for position with regional tournaments just around the corner, every game matters.
Here is what to watch for at the Woodstock - Towne Lake Patch on Tuesday: Teams: Woodstock vs. Etowah When: 6 p.m. girls; 7:30 p.m boys Where: Etowah High School Girls Preview: The Etowah Lady Eagles (18-3, 8-1) sit atop the 5-AAAAA region standings and have won seven of their last eight games. Woodstock (10-9, 5-3) is in third place and is running out of time to gain ground on the Lady Eagles. With five games remaining on their schedule, the Lady Wolverines need a few wins, and some help from Etowah, if they want to move to the top of the standings. A win on Tuesday would be a good start. With only three games left on Etowah's schedule, all it has to do to win the region is win out. Boys Preview: Even though these teams take up two of the…

The Eagles swept Cherokee on the road, as the girls won going away.
As the final buzzer sounded on Etowah’s 44-41 win over Cherokee Friday, you could almost see the weight and stress of a five-game losing streak lift off the shoulders of boys head coach Don Hurlburt. “For once we had a close game and we won,” Hurlburt said. “We came out on top.” Senior guard Austin Miramanti drained four 3-pointers and led all scorers with 18 points in a game that was a battle between two patient offenses. Both teams elected to move the ball around the perimeter and extend their possessions, and the result was a total of 13 made 3-pointers between the two teams. Etowah led almost the entire game. They briefly fell behind 39-38 late in the fourth quarter, but Miramanti answered with his final 3-pointer of the night and the …

Tuesday was a rough night for Etowah High School's varsity basketball teams.
The Etowah High School gym was not a happy place for the varsity Eagle teams Tuesday as both fell to visiting Walton. The Lady Eagles, 13-2 for the season and 4-0 in the region coming into Tuesday's game, were ranked seventh in the state but could not get shots to fall as they struggled against the Lady Raiders. Walton led by two at the end of the first period and never lost the lead, holding on for a 47-40 win. “We didn’t bring our ‘A’ game tonight,” said Etowah coach Bob Westbrook. “We didn’t play well. Walton played well and deserved to win. You can make a lot of excuses and blame it on the time off, but they outplayed us. We missed some easy shots.” The Lady Eagles came out strong, stealing the ball three times before the Lady Raiders …
