Speak Out: FDA Lowers Plan B Pill Age to 15

What do you think about the agency's approval of over-the-counter emergency contraceptive for ages 15 and up.

Tell us what you think! The Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday approved over-the-counter sales for Plan B One-Step emergency contraceptive for women ages 15 and up. The contraceptive was previously available over the counter for women ages 17 and up. According to the FDA, the Plan B pill will be labeled “not for sale to those under 15 years of age *proof of age required* not for sale where age cannot be verified.” The item will contain a product code prompting the cashier to ask for the consumer's age.

Orville Redenbacher Popcorn Recalled in Woodstock

Classic Kettle Korn ready-to-eat popcorn may contain an undeclared milk allergen.

ConAgra foods today is voluntarily recalling Orville Redenbacher’s Classic Kettle Korn flavor ready-to-eat popcorn packages because they may contain an undeclared milk allergen. In Woodstock, Orville Redenbacher products can be found at places like Kroger, Publix and Target. According to an alert issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), some bags may accidentally contain white cheddar flavored popcorn, which contains milk, an allergen, which is not declared on the product label. This recall is only a concern to those who have an allergy or sensitivity to milk. No illnesses have been reported to date, and this is the only Orville Redenbacher product affected. Pet Food Can Make Dogs, Cats – and Humans – Sick

Natura Pet Products expands its voluntary recall of dry pet foods.

Not only can your pets be affected by Salmonella from dry pet food being recalled by Natara Pet Products. Humans also are at risk from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products. The U.S. Food & Drug Administration announced that Natura Pet Products is voluntarily expanding its recall of dry pet food because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. Canadian Company Recalls Frozen Pie Crust Sold in U.S.

Kinnikinnick said a label applied to some boxes of its frozen pie crust failed to list eggs as an ingredient, creating a danger for people with allergies.

  If you have egg allergies, watch out for Kinnikinnick Frozen Pie Crust, as the company says it contains egg products that may not be listed on an applied ingredient label. The Edmonton, Alberta (Canada), company said products without an ingredient label applied to the box are not subject to this recall, as they correctly list the eggs as an ingredient. Two kinds of wedding cookies were recalled because they contained undeclared nuts.

Nestlé Recalls Some Hot Chocolate Powder

A supplier's warning to Nestlé has the company asking its customers to check the NESQUIK product codes before serving up that hot chocolate.

  Check the label before seving your kids hot chocolate this morning. Nestlé USA announced the voluntary recall of limited quantities of Nestlé NESQUIK® Chocolate Powder in the 10.9, 21.8 and 40.7 ounce canisters. According to the FDA's website, the voluntary recall is limited to only NESQUIK Chocolate Powder, which was distributed nationally. No other varieties of NESQUIK powder or any sizes or flavors of NESQUIK ready-to-drink are affected by this recall. Nestlé said it is removing the canisters from distribution because the company was notified by an ingredient supplier, Omya Inc. that it has issued a recall of certain lots of its ingredient, calcium carbonate due to possible presence of Salmonella. Publix Recalls Chopped Hearts of Romaine Lettuce

Nothing is left on the grocer's shelves, but the company wants to warn customers who may have some left in the refrigerator.

  Publix Supermarkets is issuing a voluntary recall for 10-ounce plastic bags of Publix Hearts of Romaine (Chopped Hearts of Romaine) due to the fact that they may be adulterated with Lysteria monocytogenes. Ready Pac is the private supplier of the private label product for the company, the news release said. The UPC found on the back right hand corner of the package is 41415 03886. "No illnesses have been reported up to date in connection with the hearts of romaine," said Maria Borus, Publix media and community relations director. Publix was notified of the contamination from the US Food and Drug Administration after a routine sample collection. Expired Heart of Romaine Salad Recalled

Fresh Express made the voluntary recall with the FDA.

Do you throw out food when its use-by date is past? If so, you have nothing to worry about with the voluntary recall of Hearts of Romaine salad distributed by Fresh Express Inc. The limited quantity of 10-ounce bags of salad have an expired use-by date of Aug. 23 and a product code beginning with "G222," according to a release by the FDA. The recall from the FDA said this is a precaution due to a possible health risk form Listeria monocytogenes. But no illnesses are reported in association with the recall and no other Fresh Express products are being recalled. Romaine Lettuce Under Recall by Tanimura & Antle

A single lot of the lettuce was voluntarily recalled because a random sample in Canada had E Coli bacteria.

Check your romaine lettuce if you bought the Tanimura & Antle Field Fresh Wrapped Single Head Romaine. The company has issued a voluntary recall. A single lot of romaine lettuce is being recalled because it may be contaminated with Escherichia coli O157:H7 bacteria (E. Coli O157:H7). This product is packed in a plastic bag with the UPC number 0-27918-20314-9 and may have a Best Buy date of “08 19 12”.  The product was available at retail locations Aug. 2–Aug. 19. Georgia was one of 19 states (and Puerto Rico) where the affected product was shipped in the United States. Romaine lettuce is good food for rabbits, so this story caught my eye. Recalls for E. coli, salmonella and the like are almost always done AFTER someone gets sick, so kudos to this group for issuing a recall beforehand.
