Friday Morning Fire Damages Woodstock Home

The five people inside the home escaped the blaze that allegedly started when a car caught on fire.

Five people were able to escape injury after a portion of a home caught fire early Friday morning.  Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services and the Woodstock Fire Department both responded to the fire, which broke out shortly before 1 a.m. at 1024 Ashfern Walk, located off Bells Ferry Road near Hobgood Park. According to a press release from Cherokee Fire, a caller told Cherokee County E-911 that a vehicle located just inches from the house broke out in a fire. Minutes later, dispatchers were told the home's garage was on fire. By the time fire fighters arrived on the scene, about two-thirds of the home was on fire and heavy smoke could be seen coming from the house. Business Gutted in Morning Fire

Cherokee firefighters were notified of the blaze at Vince Merolla Enterprises, 3440 Sixes Rd., at 5:10 a.m., Battalion Chief David Tilson said.

A Sixes Road business that also served as the meeting place for a local church was gutted in an early morning fire. Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services was notified of the blaze at Vince Merolla Enterprises, 3440 Sixes Rd., at 5:10 a.m., Battalion Chief David Tilson said. The facility also housed River Church. "When we arrived," he said, "we had about 30 percent involvement. We had two separate collapses on the structure." Crews are expected to be on the scene until about 9:30 a.m., Tilson said. "Right now," he said, "we're in the salvage and overhaul mode." The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
