Milton Eagles Banned from Basketball Tournaments This Season

The boys basketball team can't play in region and state tournaments this season, and the school was fined for "undue influence" toward students transferring to the school.

Milton High School lost its boys basketball coach, David Boyd, and now the team has lost any chance to be in the state tournament this season. "The Georgia High School Association has placed the boys’ basketball program at Milton High School on probation for the 2012-13 season for violating GHSA rules in regard to 'undue influence',” GHSA reported on its website earlier today, Oct. 9. The team will not be eligible to participate in the region tournament or the state tournament. The program will be on "Severe Warning Status" during the next school year, but it will be eligible for post-season play in the 2013-2014 season. Milton High also had to pay an undisclosed fine. According to basketball team's website, they will face off against the …

Lady Wolverines, Knights Reach Playoffs

Woodstock will start the state tournament at home, while River Ridge will visit North Oconee.

The girls basketball teams from Woodstock and River Ridge have advanced to the Georgia High School Association playoffs and will open play Friday. Woodstock upset host Marietta in the Region 5-AAAAA tournament championship game Saturday night, 41-40, behind a stifling defense that forced 20 turnovers, the Cherokee Tribune reported. The Lady Wolverines therefore are the No. 1 seed from the region and will host Region 6-AAAAA fourth seed West Forsyth on Friday night to start the AAAAA state tournament. A win that night will earn Woodstock another home game Feb. 28 against either North Gwinnett or South Gwinnett. In the AA tournament, River Ridge is the third seed from Region 7-AA and will travel to Bogart to play North Oconee, Region 8-AA's …

Here's the varsity sports schedule for Dec. 16 and 17 for Cobb. Cherokee, Douglas, Bartow and Paulding counties.

A matchup of two of the top three boys basketball teams in AAAAA highlights the high school sports schedule this weekend. Depending on whether you favor the Georgia Prep Country/Georgia Athletic Coaches Association poll or the Score Atlanta standings, Wheeler and Shiloh are either Nos. 1 and 2 or 2 and 3 in AAAAA right now. We'll see which team is more deserving of the high ranking and is a stronger threat to the other team in the top three, Milton, when they play at Wheeler at 6 p.m. Saturday. Holiday basketball also gets underway this weekend with the three-day Longhorn Shootout at Kell, including Kennesaw Mountain, Lassiter, Woodstock, Dunwoody, North Atlanta and Mundy's Mill. If we're missing any games from the schedule, let us know in…

Etowah, Woodstock Keep Region Rivals

Next year's Region 5-AAAAAA will look a lot like this year's Region 5-AAAAA, while River Ridge will move into 7-AAAA.

Woodstock and Etowah will play in a slightly changed region the next two years, while River Ridge will continue to travel farther to meet its rivals under the regions the Georgia High School Association announced Tuesday. The new regions are part of the GHSA’s move from five classifications to six for the next two school years. A primary reason for the GHSA's change is to cut travel time, the association says on its website. “The Reclassification Committee continued to emphasize that viewpoint by establishing sub-regions in nearly every region.” It will be up to the principals of the high schools in each region to decide whether to compete based on those subregions or to play schedules across the full region.
