The city of Woodstock could be next in line in Cherokee County to receive an opportunity zone designation from the state. The Woodstock Downtown Development Authority earlier this month unanimously approved a resolution calling on the City Council to consider applying to receive an opportunity zone designation from the Georgia Department of Community Affairs. The resolution was presented to the council during its meeting on Monday. City Manager Jeff Moon said the city is surrounded by other jurisdictions that have opportunity zone designations such as Alpharetta, Roswell and Cherokee County and it would be in Woodstock's best interest to consider applying for the designation. A proposal to build a church in the Ridgewalk area has been deemed in the best interest of the region by the state. Canton-based Watermarke Church's Developments of Regional Impact application submitted in September by the city of Woodstock to the Georgia Department of Community Affairs has been completed and the department has signed off on the plans. With the ruling in hand, the church is now moving forward with its proposal to build 250,000 square feet of buildings, which would include about 2,400 parking spaces. Northpoint Ministries, the developer and affiliate of Watermarke Church, has filed a variance request with the city of Woodstock for 32.5 acres on the south side of Ridgewalk Parkway between Ridge Trail and the Georgia …

Woodstock officials want to wait before diving into the search to replace its director of economic services. City Manager Jeff Moon said he plans to move slower on the quest to fill Billy Peppers' shoes. Peppers announced Wednesday that he will stepping down as the city's director of economic services. His last day with the city will be on Nov. 30 and he will start his new position with the Georgia Department of Community Affairs.
