More county residents found jobs in April.

The unemployment rate in Cherokee County dropped to near six percent in April, a fall of four tenths of a percent. Almost 1,000 more county residents were working than in the previous month. The 6.2 percent unemployment rate is one of the lowest in the state, especially when comparing counties with at least 25,000 people in the labor force. Of the 114,994 people in the Cherokee County labor force, 7,122 were unemployed in April. A year ago the unemployment rate was up to 7.1 percent. State Unemployment Rate Drops as Fewer File Claims

More jobs and fewer layoffs in most metro Atlanta counties helped push the state's unemployment rate down to 8.4 percent, it's lowest since December 2008.

The Georgia Department of Labor announced today that Georgia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dipped to 8.4 percent in March, the lowest rate since December 2008. The rate declined from 8.6 percent in February because of an increase in the number of jobs and fewer new layoffs. The rate was down from 9.1 percent in March a year ago. “Georgia employers created 23,700 jobs last month, which is one of the best job growth numbers we’ve had in March for almost a decade,” said State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler. “The growth was in several industries, led by leisure and hospitality and professional and business services.” Additional growth came in trade, transportation and warehousing, construction and local government. GDOL, Goodwill Co-Host Job Expo Friday

The April 19 expo will be held at Goodwill’s Shallowford Conference Center, located at 2401 Shallowford Road in Marietta.

The Georgia Department of Labor’s (GDOL) Cobb-Cherokee Career Center and Goodwill of North Georgia will co-sponsor a career expo Friday, April 19, according to a recent press release. The expo will feature employers who are currently hiring, as well as there to discuss possible future employment opportunities with the job seekers. Cherokee County Unemployment Rate Falls to 6.9%

The Georgia Department of Labor says the jobless rate dropped two-tenths of a percent in February.

Cherokee County's unemployment rate continued its downward trend last month. The rate in February dropped to 6.9 percent, down a hair from 7.1 percent in January and 7.8 in February 2012.  Out of the county's 115,182 workers, 7,914 went without jobs last month, which is less than were counted as unemployed in January and February 2012. Cherokee County Unemployment Claims Drop 31 Percent in February

The county's initial unemployment claims dipped from 880 in January to 609 in February.

Local unemployment rate figures won't be released for another week, but the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for the state dipped to 8.6 percent in February, the lowest rate since January 2009, according to the Georgia Department of Labor. The rate was down one-tenth of a percentage point from 8.7 percent in January and six-tenths of a percentage point from 9.2 percent in February a year ago, the department announced in a release today. Cherokee County's 8,321 jobless people aren't likely to care that the north metro county has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the state calculated to be 7.2 percent in January. The counties with lower unemployment – other than neighboring Forsyth County – have populations anywhere from half to less than 10 percent of the population of Cherokee County, with a correspondingly lower labor force. Cherokee County's labor force was 116,088 in January, or 110 fewer than in December 2012. The unemployment rate rose in January from 6.9 percent the month before. GDOL has been instructed to reduce Extended Unemployment Benefits by 10.7 percent, effective March 31. As of Dec. 2012, there were 7,935 unemployed people in the Cherokee County area.

The Georgia Department of Labor sent out a press release Monday informing the public that thousands of jobless workers in Georgia receiving federal Extended Unemployment Compensation (EUC) can expect a cut in those benefits effective from March 31. Sequestration is the reason for the cuts, according to the release. EUC is a federally funded benefit for long-term unemployed workers who have exhausted regular state unemployment insurance (UI) benefits. According to the Department of Labor, Cherokee County's unemployment rate jumped to 6.9 percent in December, the most recent month for which figures are available, an increase from November's 6.4 percent number . The job fair will on Wednesday will feature a number of employers looking to recruit in various sectors.

Get those resumes and cover letters ready, Woodstock!  The Georgia Department of Labor will team up with Goodwill of North Georgia to host a job fair on Wednesday. The job fair will be held at 10 a.m. to noon at Goodwill of North Georgia's Career Center at 9245 Highway 92 in Woodstock.
