Scores: Weekend Hoops, Swimmming, Wrestling

Here's the varsity sports schedule for Dec. 16 and 17 for Cobb. Cherokee, Douglas, Bartow and Paulding counties.

A matchup of two of the top three boys basketball teams in AAAAA highlights the high school sports schedule this weekend. Depending on whether you favor the Georgia Prep Country/Georgia Athletic Coaches Association poll or the Score Atlanta standings, Wheeler and Shiloh are either Nos. 1 and 2 or 2 and 3 in AAAAA right now. We'll see which team is more deserving of the high ranking and is a stronger threat to the other team in the top three, Milton, when they play at Wheeler at 6 p.m. Saturday. Holiday basketball also gets underway this weekend with the three-day Longhorn Shootout at Kell, including Kennesaw Mountain, Lassiter, Woodstock, Dunwoody, North Atlanta and Mundy's Mill. If we're missing any games from the schedule, let us know in…

4-AAAAA, 5-AAAA Basketball Busy

Here's the varsity high school sports schedule for Dec. 13 in Bartow, Cherokee, Cobb, Douglas and Paulding counties.

Tuesday night usually means high school basketball, but with exams now and holiday tournaments upcoming, many schools are taking the night off. Etowah, Woodstock Keep Region Rivals

Next year's Region 5-AAAAAA will look a lot like this year's Region 5-AAAAA, while River Ridge will move into 7-AAAA.

Woodstock and Etowah will play in a slightly changed region the next two years, while River Ridge will continue to travel farther to meet its rivals under the regions the Georgia High School Association announced Tuesday. The new regions are part of the GHSA’s move from five classifications to six for the next two school years. A primary reason for the GHSA's change is to cut travel time, the association says on its website. “The Reclassification Committee continued to emphasize that viewpoint by establishing sub-regions in nearly every region.” It will be up to the principals of the high schools in each region to decide whether to compete based on those subregions or to play schedules across the full region. The subregions shouldn’t come …

River Ridge Headed for AAAA

Woodstock and Etowah will find a lot of familiar faces as part of the new Class AAAAAA next year.

River Ridge will find itself in some new company athletically next school year when the Georgia High School Association shifts to six classes from the current five. The Knights are moving from AA to AAAA, where River Ridge will be among the biggest of the 71 schools at that level, according to the proposal the GHSA unveiled Monday afternoon. Meanwhile, not much is likely to change for Cherokee County’s biggest schools, Woodstock, Etowah and Cherokee, but many of the opponents will be different for Sequoyah and Creekview. The GHSA grouped its member schools for the next two years based on their reported enrollments this year from ninth to 11th grade. All schools have until Dec. 5 to ask to move into a higher classification, usually for …
