Crossfire Youth Group Grabs Top Honors for Christmas Float

Here are the Christmas Jubilee and Parade of Lights decoration winners.

And the winners are ... Perfect weather blessed the City of Woodstock Christmas Jubilee Parade of Lights and parade watchers in the thousands who came to downtown Woodstock on Dec. 3 to witness more than 200 parade entries march down Main Street! Crossfire Youth Ministry’s float was voted Best Holiday Float. The Crossfire float focused on giving, rather than receiving, featuring a modern day Mary, Joseph and Jesus who were homeless. The float presented an Atlanta skyline and two street performers who sang Christmas songs. The ministry’s trash can drum band followed by street performers dancing with scarves carrying graffiti-themed banners asking everyone to “Love One Another as You Love Yourself!” Most Original Float honors went to …

The 5 Best Christmas Novelty Songs Ever

Did your favorite Christmas novelty song make the list?

I think it's found in Jeph Loeb's unbelievably awesome The Long Halloween, but the single greatest panel in comic book history shows the Joker, tiptoeing through the empty house of Harvey Dent, wearing a Santa hat and goofily singing the following to himself: Jingle bells, Batman smells Robin laid an egg The Batmobile lost a wheel And the Joker got away... In terms of meta-jokes, there can be none finer. First time I read those panels, I laughed out loud - not because of the Joker's obvious insanity, but because I immediately went back to the fifth grade, or whatever year it was that I first heard that song. Sung, obviously, to the tune of "Jingle Bells," it stuck with me because A) it was horribly catchy, B) it combined Christmas with …

Easy and Festive Holiday Cookies

Bring the holidays into your home with the scents and flavors of the season.

I love baking during the holidays. It warms the kitchen and fills it with the wonderful scents of sugar and spice. As soon as one of those sugar plum fairies comes dancing through my kitchen, I’ll know I’ve gone too far. In the meantime, I’m going to bake and decorate some of my favorite cookies to eat, give to friends, eat, serve at parties and eat.  The first recipe is one of my very favorites. I got this from a friend when I was in college; then lost it due to my ever popular habit of writing recipes on the backs of grocery receipts, finally contacted her for the recipe again and have been making it ever since. My friend Dinnie Weaks calls these cookies Ginger Stars because she always cuts them into star shapes. I call them Ginger Stars…

Christmas Day Service: Yay or Nay?

With Christmas on Sunday, some Cherokee County churches have amended their worship times.

Churches across Cherokee County are taking varying approaches to worship on Christmas Day, from changing service times to holding no services at all. The reason for the scramble this year: Christmas falls on Sunday. At Protestant churches, Christmas Eve is traditionally one of the best-attended days of the year. But most churches do not hold services on Christmas Day, recognizing it as a time for families to relax at home. Roman Catholics traditionally have multiple services on Christmas. Most churches in Cherokee are opting for multiple services on Christmas Eve and one service on Christmas Day, with no Sunday school classes. Times vary widely, and in some cases, so does the service style. Services for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day: If …

Salvation Army Donations Down

The Salvation Army is asking for the community's help to reach their goal to not only help with Christmas, but also with the elderly, homeless and needy families.

The Salvation Army is at only 34 percent of their goal as of Dec. 15. Because of this, they have released the following statement: The Salvation Army of Atlanta is experiencing a drastic decline in donations. The need has sharply increased with continued unemployment and underemployment. More people are turning to The Salvation Army for assistance with food, clothing, utilities and shelter. This shortfall in donations is critical for many in the Atlanta Community. Donations that are received during the holiday are not just for toys and Christmas cheer; they support the elderly, homeless and needy families with children in the 13 counties that The Salvation ArmyMetro Atlanta serves.  “It will be very difficult to meet these needs if we don’…

Spinach Mushroom Quiche

Here's a delicious meat-free dinner that allows for yummy leftovers for your lunch box.

I love the versatility of quiche!  Eggs, cheese, and milk can be embellished with so many different combinations of meats and vegetables that you can make dozens of different varieties of quiche with the basic recipe. This recipe makes two pies, which is another plus because they freeze so beautifully and warm up so quickly that they are perfect for a quick meal on nights you don't want to cook, or easily pack up by the slice for taking to work. Tonight I made spinach and mushroom quiche, thanks to the beautiful Shiitake mushrooms shared by my neighbor, Dory Franklin. Below the quiche is the recipe for a wonderful chickpea salad.   This dish is high carb, but the good kind (brown rice) and it's also gluten-free! Spinach Mushroom Quiche 2 …

Send an Animated Holiday ECard

Give your friends and family a good laugh over the holidays with a customizable eCard.

Some families have already sorted, stamped and sent their annual holiday greeting cards to friends and family across the country. They scheduled their holiday portraits months in advance and coordinated their matching Santa sweater outfits around Labor Day. I commend these paragons of holiday virtue. But I am not one of them. Forget the fancy gold envelopes sealed in candle wax with the family crest. This year, consider sending an eCard instead. They're fun. They're easy. And if you know where to look—they're free. Don't forget, you can send them last minute as well. In my search for the ultimate holiday eCard, I stumbled upon sendables.jibjab.com. The site offers a free animated eCard that allows you to create a customizable "Rockin …

Mexican Christmas Eve Salad

A refreshing salad combination of fruits and vegetables for your holiday dinner menu.

In Mexico there is a nine day celebration from Dec. 16 through Dec. 24 called Las Posadas. It typically starts with a parade each night of children enacting the journey of Mary and Joseph that leads them to the stable where Jesus is born. The last house they visit each night is where the posada party is celebrated. The nine days represents the nine months of Mary’s pregnancy. This salad is served on Christmas Eve, the last night of Las Posadas. It is a combination of both fruit and vegetables which makes for a light and refreshing salad. This salad makes a beautiful addition to your Christmas dinner menu. Mexican Christmas Eve Salad (Ensalada de Noche Buena) 2 beets, cut off roots & stems, wrap in foil & set in a baking dish, bake at 400 …

Woodstock Lights Giant Menorah

The fourth annual Menorah Lighting Ceremony was held Tuesday night to celebrate the start of Hanukkah.

Hundreds gathered at the Park at City Center despite the rain for the annual Menorah Lighting Ceremony to enjoy hot latkes, live music and of course, the lighting of a 10-foot menorah to celebrate the start of Hanukkah. The Chabad Jewish Center, which serves Cherokee, North Cobb and South Bartow counties, sponsored the community Festival of Lights. Special guest speakers included State Sen. Chip Rogers and State Rep. Charlice Byrd. Rogers was given the honor to light the Shamash candle, the center candle while Rabbi Zalman Charytan, director of the Chabad Jewish Center, lit the first candle for the first night. Photos are courtesy of members of the Chabad Jewish Center. Feel free to add more photos to the gallery.
