Unemployment Rate Drops to 6.2 Percent in Cherokee

More county residents found jobs in April.

The unemployment rate in Cherokee County dropped to near six percent in April, a fall of four tenths of a percent. Almost 1,000 more county residents were working than in the previous month. The 6.2 percent unemployment rate is one of the lowest in the state, especially when comparing counties with at least 25,000 people in the labor force. Of the 114,994 people in the Cherokee County labor force, 7,122 were unemployed in April. A year ago the unemployment rate was up to 7.1 percent. Just to the south, Cobb County's jobless rate dipped below seven percent, falling three tenths of a percent in a month.  Cobb County's labor force lost approximately 200 workers while almost another 1,000 found jobs to lower the rate. In April 2012, Cobb's …

Cherokee's Unemployment Rate Falls to 6.7%

The county's March unemployment rate was nearly 1 percent below last year's figure.

Cherokee County's unemployment rate dropped to 6.7 percent in March, a decrease of two tenths of a percent from February's rate. The Georgia Department of Labor announced today that metro Atlanta’s unemployment rate declined to 7.9 percent in March from 8.3 percent in February. The rate was 8.9 percent in March a year ago. The rate declined because of an increase in the number of jobs and fewer new layoffs. Cherokee County's unemployment rate continued its downward trend last month. The rate in March dropped to 6.7 percent, down slightly from 6.9 percent in February and 7.5 in March 2012.  Out of the county's 115,212 workers, 7,662 went without jobs last month, which is less than were counted as unemployed in February this year and March  …

State Unemployment Rate Drops as Fewer File Claims

More jobs and fewer layoffs in most metro Atlanta counties helped push the state's unemployment rate down to 8.4 percent, it's lowest since December 2008.

The Georgia Department of Labor announced today that Georgia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dipped to 8.4 percent in March, the lowest rate since December 2008. The rate declined from 8.6 percent in February because of an increase in the number of jobs and fewer new layoffs. The rate was down from 9.1 percent in March a year ago. “Georgia employers created 23,700 jobs last month, which is one of the best job growth numbers we’ve had in March for almost a decade,” said State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler. “The growth was in several industries, led by leisure and hospitality and professional and business services.” Additional growth came in trade, transportation and warehousing, construction and local government. The March growth …

Cherokee County Unemployment Claims Drop 31 Percent in February

The county's initial unemployment claims dipped from 880 in January to 609 in February.

Local unemployment rate figures won't be released for another week, but the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for the state dipped to 8.6 percent in February, the lowest rate since January 2009, according to the Georgia Department of Labor. The rate was down one-tenth of a percentage point from 8.7 percent in January and six-tenths of a percentage point from 9.2 percent in February a year ago, the department announced in a release today. Overall, it's good news for the region and the state. “The unemployment rate is the lowest it’s been in more than four years, and I give the credit to Georgia employers who continue to create jobs and lay off fewer workers,” said State Labor Commission Mark Butler. “In fact, there were fewer workers …

Cherokee County's Jobless Rate Rises to 7.2%

Despite the 8,321 people not working in the county, it still has a lower unemployment rate than the Georgia or metro Atlanta averages.

Cherokee County's 8,321 jobless people aren't likely to care that the north metro county has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the state calculated to be 7.2 percent in January. The counties with lower unemployment – other than neighboring Forsyth County – have populations anywhere from half to less than 10 percent of the population of Cherokee County, with a correspondingly lower labor force. Cherokee County's labor force was 116,088 in January, or 110 fewer than in December 2012. The unemployment rate rose in January from 6.9 percent the month before. A year earlier the Cherokee unemployment rate was much worse at 7.8 percent and with 8,902 people jobless. County            Rate Forsyth             6.7% Cherokee         7.2 Cobb…

GA Unemployment Benefits to be Cut Due to Sequester

GDOL has been instructed to reduce Extended Unemployment Benefits by 10.7 percent, effective March 31. As of Dec. 2012, there were 7,935 unemployed people in the Cherokee County area.

The Georgia Department of Labor sent out a press release Monday informing the public that thousands of jobless workers in Georgia receiving federal Extended Unemployment Compensation (EUC) can expect a cut in those benefits effective from March 31. Sequestration is the reason for the cuts, according to the release. EUC is a federally funded benefit for long-term unemployed workers who have exhausted regular state unemployment insurance (UI) benefits. According to the Department of Labor, Cherokee County's unemployment rate jumped to 6.9 percent in December, the most recent month for which figures are available, an increase from November's 6.4 percent number . That equates to 7,935 unemployed people in the Cherokee County area. According to…

Cherokee County Jobless Rate Among Lowest in Georgia

Neighboring Forsyth County was one of the few in the state to beat the county's 6.9 percent unemployment rate, according to the state Department of Labor.

Most counties in Georgia would be glad to have Cherokee County's lower than average 6.9 percent unemployment rate. That's little to cheer about for the almost 8,000 local residents who don't have jobs, however. Cherokee County's labor force is larger at 115,307.  Because of this, having 7,935 people not working puts the unemployment rate only slightly higher at 6.9 percent in December. But that's a half a percent higher than in November 2012. A year earlier the Cherokee unemployment rate was worse at 7.4 percent. No Change in Cherokee's Unemployment Rate

Cherokee County's unemployment held steady between September and October.

Cherokee County's preliminary unemployment rate remained the same during the month of October, according to the Georgia Department of Labor. The county's rate last month clocked in at 6.6 percent, which is the same rate the county had in September. October's figure is also a considerable drop from the October 2011 rate of 7.9 percent. The lowest rate in the region belonged to Forsyth County, which had an October unemployment rate of 6.4 percent. Fayette County ranked third with its 7.1 percent unemployment rate for last month.  Cherokee's labor force in October was 114,622, up slightly from 114,093 in September and 112,793 in October 2011.  The metro Atlanta unemployment rate was 8.2 percent, down slightly from 8.3 in September and 9.4 …
