KSU Coach Brian Bohannon 'Here for the Long Haul'

Woodstock resident Brian Bohannon was introduced as the Owls' first head football coach on Tuesday.

Declaring that he's found a new football home -- which happens to be very close to his family home -- Kennesaw State University football coach Brian Bohannon said he's eager to get started creating a program from scratch. Bohannon, 42, a former University of Georgia wide receiver who has been quarterbacks coach at Georgia Tech for the last seven years, was introduced Tuesday as he begins to guide the Owls from a long-term idea to on-the-field reality in two years. "I felt there was something special here," Bohannon said during his first press conference, held at KSU's Fifth Third Bank Stadium near campus. "All football is going to do is open that up for everyone to see." The Woodstock resident's hiring was announced by KSU on Sunday, after…

Recipes for Life

A mother passes along tips for cooking and living well.

Tonight I began to compile for my 19-year old son an electronic recipe box. My preference was to assemble an actual 3-D metal box with antiquated 3x5 index cards divided by food categories. But I am quite aware of my son's aversion to all things non-electronic. So I started creating a colorful collection of PowerPoint slides with recipes to catch his interest as he moves to his apartment in August and begins his second year at Kennesaw State University. My son doesn't need to become the next Bobby Flay, but I would like for him to learn some basics. I know from experience that marrying a man who does not know how to use a measuring cup is...aggravating at best. I'm talking about cooking rice, making spaghetti with Ragu sauce, boiling an …

Family Matters

A Journey to Indianapolis

A young man leaves Woodstock for Indianapolis and the chance to learn a lot about life.

This morning my husband and I hugged our 19-year old son as he departed for three weeks in Indianapolis. He and his friend Colin will join an 18-member work crew to install commercial shelving at a large warehouse. This opportunity arose just recently, thanks to Colin’s father and his associates, and brought me both a sense of pride and a smidgen of nervousness. Frankly, I’m glad the lad will be out of the house for three weeks. I can resume my lifelong habit of walking around the house in my underwear and I’m released from the obligation of stocking the fridge with nutritious foods and preparing meals upon demand. Laundry levels will decrease by about 90 percent and my home will be free of teen attitude for 21 days. Taylor is quite …

River Ridge Wins Geography Bowl

The River Ridge High School students took down Cherokee High for first place.

River Ridge High School students won first place at the Kennesaw State University Invitational Geography Bowl on Friday, April 13.  The quiz bowl format seeded teams from the first 12 rounds and after lunch, teams were seeded according to scores from the first 12 rounds for a "March Madness"-type tournament.  River Ridge went in the second seed and beat Cherokee High School for the win.  Questions covered political, physical and human geography facts.  For example, team member Phillip Aalfs answered the question, “When a river changes its course and leaves a lake behind, what kind of lake is this?”   Answer: Oxbow lake. The event was sponsored by the KSU Department of Geography and Anthropology and the Georgia Geographic Alliance.

Veteran, Survivor Suffers from PTSD

As a war veteran and a survivor of Hurricane Katrina, the single father from Woodstock counsels fellow student veterans at KSU.

"I’m a very complicated person these days. I never wanted to be a complicated person," says John Breckenridge, a cool Louisiana accent sliding off the tongue. Breckenridge, 40, is a former member of the U.S. Navy. He currently works as transitions coordinator at KSU's Veterans Resource Center where he counsels fellow veterans looking to pursue college educations. In addition to a number of physical ailments, Breckenridge suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder. As both a war veteran and a survivor of Hurricane Katrina, he represents two groups at a significantly increased risk of developing PTSD. There's nothing like the smell of the bayou water, says Breckenridge. The single father lives in Woodstock with his 17-year-old daughter but …

It is so refreshing to hear about teachers who really care about their students. I say "Good Job" Malissa Hogan. Thank You for caring about the students and going above and beyond the requirements of your job. The teachers of this country are helping to shape our future leaders. I feel they are underpaid, and deserve much more honors than they receive.   more ›
