The Rotary Club of Canton recently presented the proceeds from its first-ever Pancakes with Santa breakfast, which raised $1,244 for local food pantries. The inaugural event was held on Saturday Dec. 1 at Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services' BridgeMill Fire Station. The crowd enjoyed pancakes and bacon cooked up by Rotarians and visited with Santa and Mrs. Claus, thanks to Cherokee Fire's own Tim Cavender and his wife, Pam, who generously donated their time. The proceeds were split between MUST Ministries in Canton and Papa's Pantry in Woodstock, which each were given a check for $622 by the Rotary Club. Club President Jeff Mitchell said he greatly appreciated everyone who made the event a success, adding he hopes it becomes an…

Cherokee Chick-fil-A restaurants team up to raise money for MUST Ministries
Chick-fil-A restaurants in Cherokee County raised $4,170.29 for MUST Ministries through a special milkshake promotion this fall. Chick-fil-A gave a coupon for a free milkshake to any customer who donated $2 or more. The four locations joined efforts to raise the money, which will be used to prepare the new MUST facility that’s set to open on Brown Industrial Boulevard in January. On hand for the check presentation were, Ron Hammock, manager of the Dwarf House on Ga. 92; Howard Cox, Capital Campaign/MUST Ministries; the restaurant’s cow mascot; Dr. Ike Reighard, President and CEO of MUST; and Kevin Williams, Franchised Restaurant Operator of the two Canton restaurants. Scott Hall, Franchised Restaurant Operator of Chick-fil-A in Towne Lake…

The ministry has found a new facility near Interstate 575. Now it needs your financial support.
After more than two decades of serving the poor in an outdated, cramped building on West Marietta Street, officials with MUST Ministries said today that it is time to move. And they think that they've found the perfect place to serve the 11,000 Cherokee County residents who come to the agency annually for clothes, food, and employment and housing assistance. All they need, MUST spokeswoman Kaye Cagle said, is your financial support to move by year's end. MUST bought the building, a new, 9,000-square-foot facility at 111 Brown Industrial Pkwy., in February. For years, the building has been vacant, Cagle said. The ministry needs $592,000 to build out the facility, which cost $976,000 to acquire. Add $132,000 for operating and related …

Paul Buckner, Cherokee’s summer lunch coordinator, estimates 1,200-1,500 lunches will be distributed daily in the county.
While summer brings a needed break from the classroom, there’s a vital part of the school’s schedule that shouldn’t be missed: the mid-day meal. That was the concern of Carol Hunt, a teacher who, in 1995, asked MUST Ministries to provide sack lunches for her impoverished students. She promised to deliver the meals all summer, 25 each day. Today, she’s still making deliveries, with help from thousands of volunteers. Last year in Cherokee, MUST Ministries arranged for 40,047 meals to be delivered to the county’s students. Children in six counties—Cherokee, Cobb, Douglas, Gwinnett, North Fulton and Paulding—consumed 141,893 lunches. While MUST Ministries only has offices in Cherokee and Cobb, the long-range plan has the nonprofit helping with…

If trick-or-treating left you with mounds of Mounds, donate some to soldiers overseas and the needy in Cherokee.
Two businesses have opened up to accept donations of Halloween candy for worthy causes. Cherokee Children’s Dentistry will buy back current patients’ candy for $1 per pound up to five pounds. Donations from non-patients are accepted, too. The candy will be mailed directly to Marines in Afghanistan and Iraq from one of the office managers whose brother is in the service. You can drop by Cherokee Children’s Dentistry from now until Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the exception of 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. when the workers go on break. After one day, office managers for the dentistry said they have collected almost 10 pounds of candy for the troops. MUST Cherokee is also taking donations of candy to hand out with their food orders, said Dale Cooper…

A collaborative alliance was signed Monday between the Education and Employment Department of Must Ministries and the U.S. Dept. of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Atlanta-West Area Office. It is only the second such partnership this office of OSHA has signed, adding to the significance. The agreement launches with a 10-hour general safety course Oct. 24-26 and will relate to seasonal needs, such as warehousing and stocking. A construction safety course in February will prepare job seekers for spring and summer building work. Andre Richards, OSHA’s area director, explained that students will learn about occupational safety and standards, and receive health and safety training, particularly by reducing and preventing …
