Farmers Market Brings Locally Grown Food to Downtown Woodstock

Main Street Woodstock's annual Farmers Market will kick off on May 25 and dozens of vendors are ready to go.

Woodstock residents will soon have a chance to shop for fresh produce, homemade products and baked goods virtually in their own backyards. Main Street Woodstock's Farmers Market, presented by Cherokee Bank, will begin later this month on May 25. The market will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. each Saturday through Oct. 26 in the parking lot behind the Chambers at City Center/Elm Street Arts facility. Twenty-five vendors have signed up for the market, and the city receives about three applications each week, said Kyle Bennett, assistant director of tourism and visitor center operations for the Woodstock Visitors Center at Dean's Store. Woodstock West By Walton, Market Street Now Open

Two ribbon cuttings were held to celebrate the opening of Woodstock West by Walton Communities and Market Street.

A new residential development has officially opened up to prospective tenants.  Woodstock West by Walton, a 308-unit upscale apartment complex, held a ribbon cutting to celebrate the opening of their development, which sits just west of Main Street in downtown Woodstock. The ribbon cutting was held by Main Street Woodstock, which also held a ribbon cutting to celebrate the opening of Market Street.  Market Street is one of many streets the city of Woodstock has planned for its grid network, a set of streets that would be built on the west side of Main Street to make it easier to navigate the downtown area.  Woodstock West features loft, one, two and three-bedroom apartments with a mixture of floor plans.  Other amenities include "spacious…

Winners Crowned in Woodstock Mardi Gras Parade

The Mardi Gras parade kicked off the city's annual Friday Night Live series.

Several hundred residents braved the cold, blistery conditions to celebrate the kick-off event for Woodstock's Friday Night Live Series. March's theme, Mardi Gras on Main, featured a Mardi Gras parade and the naming of a king and queen of the event. This year, Woodstock City Clerk Rhonda Pezzello was named the queen while Dominique Amin with Bridal Exchange Boutique was named the king of this year's event. About 750 people attended this year's event, said Kyle Bennett, assistant director of tourism and visitor center operations for the city. Farmers Market, Friday Night Live Return To Woodstock

Two popular events in downtown Woodstock will soon make a comeback.

Downtown Woodstock will soon see two of its most popular events return to its streets. Next Friday, March 1, is the start of the long-running Friday Night Live series, which includes festivities throughout the downtown area.  Participating businesses usually stay open later and have activities going on at their stores related to the theme of the month. March's theme will be Mardi Gras on Main. The event typically includes a Mardi Gras parade and the crowning of a king and queen of the event. The Main Street Woodstock Farmers Market will also soon return to downtown Woodstock. Woodstock's 'Friday Night Live' Starts in March

Main Street Woodstock has announced the themes of this year's Friday Night Live series.

Main Street Woodstock has announced its 2013 themes for its popular Friday Night Live Events. The series are held on the first Fridays between March and October of this year,  This year's themes are:  Friday Night Live, which includes festivities throughout the downtown area, allows participating businesses to stay open later and have activities going on at their stores related to the theme of the month.  The downtown festival typically is held between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m.  For more information, call the Woodstock Visitor's Center at Dean's Store at (770) 924-0406.

Movies To Debut In Downtown Woodstock

The city is partnering with Northside Hospital-Cherokee to screen movies in the park

The Woodstock Downtown Development Authority is teaming up with Northside Hospital-Cherokee to screen three movies at the Park at City Center. The city will show the movies on one Saturday during the months of October, November and December. The movies are: The event is free and the public is encouraged to bring a blanket. Families will be able to purchase concessions or bring dinner to the park from area restaurants.

Couple Wins Woodstock Wedding Giveaway

Holly Springs residents Coty Ervin and Jimmy Thigpen will receive a free wedding.

Coty Ervin and Jimmy Thigpen were planning a small summer wedding with only an intimate gathering of close family and friends. That was before they decided to enter the Woodstock Wedding Giveaway in early August.  Nearly two months after they entered the contest, the couple now won’t have to worry about streamlining the day they formally decide to spend the rest of their lives together. The couple on Friday morning was declared the winner of the contest, which was sponsored by Main Street Woodstock and the Bridal Exchange Boutique.  The contest, which started on Aug. 1, received a total of 11,307 votes. Local Organization Transforms Parking Space Into Mini Park

GROW's initiative is part of nationwide effort to draw attention to urban spaces.

One parking space in downtown Woodstock will be transformed into a park as part of a national initiative on urban spaces. GROW, or Green Reaps Opportunity in Woodstock, will take part in Park(ing) Day 2012, which encourages local artists, designers and citizens to transform parking spaces to mini temporary public parks. Today's event held by GROW is the only one in the state taking part in the campaign.  Melissa Casteel, one of GROW's founding members, said the organization's mini park will be up for the public to see between noon and 7 p.m. today at a parking space near the pedestrian railroad crossing on Main Street between Oak and Elm Streets. Woodstock High Business Expo a Success

Woodstock students and their parents learned about local businesses Thursday at the second annual Downtown Woodstock Business Expo.

Several hundred Woodstock High School students and parents attended Thursday's Business Expo put on by Woodstock's downtown business owners. The event brought local business owners face-to-face with potential parttime employees and open the eyes of students to the array of shops and stores outside the local malls, said Kyle Bennett, operations director of Woodstock's tourism program. The Main Street Woodstock business development program hosted the event for the second year and this year's turnout increased , Bennett said . "I bet the seniors at our local High Schools probably have no idea  what is going on here or how much fun they could have at our events," Mitzi Saxon wrote in the July issue of the Main Street Woodstock INSIDER. …

Miss Huff Lantana Named City Flower

With 55 percent of the votes, the Rudbeckia was beat by the Miss Huff Lantana in a runoff election.

The battle between two flowers has ended, and one came out victorious with your help. The Miss Huff Lantana has been deemed the Woodstock City Flower after receiving 55 percent of the votes in last week's runoff election. There were 359 votes cast in the online election, according to Main Street Woodstock. Residents will start to see the Miss Huff Lantana as members of GROW, Green Reaps Opportunity for Woodstock, will be featuring this sun-loving shrub in beautification projects around town.
