The delegation on Monday shared with residents what bills they are supporting or introducing during the 2013 legislative session.
Cherokee County's legislative delegation on Monday was greeted with about 50 residents who filed into the Cherokee County Historic Courthouse in downtown Canton to hear what pieces of legislation they plan to champion. Lawmakers during the session, which is already halfway over, shared with the audience which bills they've endorsed, sponsored or introduced. The Cherokee County Republican Party will host a forum Monday in Canton where lawmakers will discuss the 2013 legislative session.
Cherokee County's legislators in the Georgia General Assembly will gather Monday evening to discuss their bills and their vision for 2013 in a forum hosted by the Cherokee County Republican Party. The forum will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Cherokee County Historic Courthouse at 100 North Street in downtown Canton. The forum will be held in the second floor courtroom. Members of the delegation who are slated to participate include State Senators Brandon Beach (R-Alpharetta) and Barry Loudermilk (R-Cassville); State Representatives Michael Caldwell (R-Woodstock), Calvin Hill (R-Hickory Flat), John Carson (R-Marietta), Mandi Ballinger (R-Canton) and Scot Turner (R-Holly Springs). The Canton resident will become the newest member of the Georgia House of Representatives once the Georgia General Assmebly's 2013 legislative session starts in January.
Political newcomer Mandi Ballinger of Canton will soon take office as the first state representative in the newly created Georgia House District 23. The district is new to Cherokee County and covers western Cherokee, ranging from the southwest portion up to north Canton and extending the northwest corner. Ballinger, 37, has a bachelor of business administration in finance from Kennesaw State University. She and husband Eric Ballinger have one son Henry, 6 and they attend St. Peter Chanel in Roswell. Two Cherokee County races with more than two candidates running averted runoffs Tuesday as the incumbents won a majority of the vote, according to returns. Incumbent Tax Commissioner Sonya Little, who has served as tax commissioner since David Fields resigned in February 2011, will stay on the job after defeating Kenny Phelps and Robert Wade Wilkie. Little received 20,576 votes, or 58.2% of the vote. Phelps finished with 8,480 voters, 24 percent of the total, and Wilkie had 6,283 or 17.18 percent. State Rep. Mandi Ballinger (R-Canton) fended off three challengers. Ballinger garnered 4,090 votes or 52.46 percent of the vote. Alan Shinall finished second, with 2,031 or 26.5 percent of the vote.
