Open Mic Night is Success at Cotton Mill Deli

Five local performers entertain friends and diners.

Cotton Mill Deli struck a blow for the unheard consumer in all of us this Friday by proving that, sometimes the best ideas really do come from the customer. At the insistence of a handful of frequent diners, owner Jake Marler transformed his simple thought of showcasing the occasional musician into a bi-monthly musical event, Open Mic Night, where a whole cast of local performers can entertain the audience back to back. "I just wanted to have a local place for people to gather and hang out in a warm, comfortable atmosphere," Marler said of his establishment, which opened on Main Street in December. One particular restaurant, however, could not be intimidated by a little ice and wind. Abiding by the same standard they've set for every other day of the year, including Thanksgiving and Christmas, Waffle House of Woodstock remained open for the duration of Georgia's sudden cold snap, offering up coffee and hash browns to their thankful icicle customers.  A decision made at the corporate level, being open every day is something people have come to expect from Waffle House, and they saw no reason …

Cotton Mill Deli Hosts Debut Open Mic Night

Stop by on Saturday to hear local musicians perform.

Woodstock residents are in for a treat this coming Saturday when Main Street newcomer Cotton Mill Deli hosts its first Open Mic Night. Local performers with a message to share will be taking the stage and indulging diners in an evening of music and entertainment. Owner Jake Marler said the event is something that grew from the simple idea of hiring a performer to a full-blown musical showcase, all at the insistance of his loyal customers. "I wanted to have a band here and there, but a few of our regulars suggested we have an open mic, so we asked around and got some much needed help lining everything up," Marler explained. Customer contributions didn't end there. Stephanie Prince-Warren, a frequent diner at the Cotton Mill Deli, can be …

A handful of businesses in and around Woodstock stay open when everyone else is home for the holidays.

After all, when else would families coming together en masse signal the consumer world grinding to a halt across the country? Although the majority of business owners and employees will be staying home on Dec. 25, there are 10 rebels in or around Woodstock that are sticking it out, and a few of them may come as a surprise. 10. Starbucks Coffee is arguably the most important part of any morning that sees thousands of people rising before the sun to prepare a holiday feast. Starbucks will be serving its famous seasonal creations in Towne Lake …
