Cherokee Commission To Hear Update on Failed Recycling Venture

The County Commission will meet jointly with the Resource Recovery Development Authority to discuss Ball Ground Recycling.

An update to the county's efforts to find an operator for the failed Ball Ground Recycling deal will be heard in a joint meeting today by the Cherokee County Commission and Resource Recovery Development Authority. The meeting will start at 4 p.m. at the Cherokee County administration building. Both boards will also discuss potential candidates and site visits and review the broker/referral agreement.  The commission during its 3 p.m. work session will also review the fiscal year 2012 audit and comprehensive annual financial report.  During its regular meeting at 6 p.m., the board will consider three requests to rezone property.  Stonetrust Investors, Inc. is asking the county to rezone 4 acres at 3171 Cumming Highway just east of Canton …

Cherokee Gets 399 Acres for Parks Use

The County Commission has tentatively accepted a donation of 399 acres from the Scott Hudgens Foundation, which it use for parks and recreation space.

Cherokee County's greenspace will soon grow by nearly 400 acres. The Scott Hudgens Foundation has chosen to donate 399 acres of land along Highway 140 near the Cherokee County/Bartow County line to the county government.  The County Commission unanimously voted to accept the donation pending the county receives the proper documents and completes the title search.  The land sits adjacent to the county's Garland Mountain Horse and Hike Trails in the northwest corner of the county and has frontage along the state route. The county plans to use the land for active and/or passive parks and recreation.  Scott Hudgens, the late World War II veteran, is the same person who donated the land that's now houses the 775-acre Georgia National Cemetery …

Cherokee Commissioners To Hear Rezoning Case Recommended For Denial

The Cherokee County Commission will vote on a request to rezone property on Cumming Highway from residential to commercial, which has been recommended for denial by the planning commission.

A request to rezone property for commercial uses in a primarily residential corridor will be considered by the Cherokee County Commission during its meeting today. The meeting will start at 6 p.m., but will be preceded by a 3 p.m. work session. Both meetings will be held at the county administration building in Canton. Stonetrust Investors, Inc. is asking the county to rezone 4 acres at 3171 Cumming Highway just east of Canton from R-80 residential to general commercial. The applicant would like to utilize the property for office/service uses. The Cherokee County Planning Commission has recommended denial of the case. Assisted Living Facility Gives Some Woodstock Residents Heartburn

A proposal to build a 150-unit senior assisted living facility on Highway 92 has a few Woodstock residents concerned about its impact on their neighborhood.

A request to annex and rezone property to accommodate a senior assisted living facility along Highway 92 drew the ire of residents in an adjacent neighborhood during the Woodstock City Council meeting on Monday. The council unanimously approved a request from William Pettit III regarding 8.03 acres at 12590 Highway 92. About 5.7 acres of the property, currently zoned residential, is in unincorporated Cherokee County and the remaining portion is in the city limits and is zoned general commercial.  Pettit asked the city to annex the county portion of the property and rezone the entire 8.03 acres to senior living to accommodate an assisted living and memory care facility. Woodstock Green Lights Memory Care Facility, New Ward Maps

The Woodstock City Council approved a rezoning request to build a memory care facility and the new boundaries for its six wards.

A new assisted living and memory care facility could soon be on the way for Woodstock. The Woodstock City Council approved a request from Alpharetta-based Woodstock SLP, LLC to rezone 6.63 acres property located east of Trickum Road and north of Popcorn Drive to accommodate an assisted living/memory care facility.  About 4.3 acres was zoned office space and institutional and roughly 2.33 acres was zoned general commercial and the council's unanimous approve rezones the entire property to senior living to allow the company to build the facility.  The proposal includes building a 59-unit 40,000-square-feet, one-level facility. District Pushes for Phones in Class

If a waiver is approved by the state, students would be allowed to bring their own smart technology to use in the classroom to supplement their studies.

Officials with the Cherokee County School System are hoping a waiver of the state’s ban on personal communication devices will enable them to start a pilot program utilizing smart technology to aid in learning. “It’s a growing trend nationwide,” said Bobby Blount, assistant superintendent for accountability, technology and strategic planning. “What we want to do is leverage their student-owned technology to increase access. We’re getting into a world where more and more testing is coming online. There’s a plethora of digital content out there. Some people do not have internet access on phones. We only have 700 minutes shared between 5 people. No texting on our phones, just your basic phones.
