Etowah High School graduate Philip Litrel wins scholarship from Georgia Tech.
Philip T. Litrel of Woodstock, is among some 2,000 winners nationwide of National Merit Scholarships announced Monday. Litrel, a graduate of Etowah High School, received the college-sponsored scholarship from Georgia Institute of Technology. Litrel will study business management at Georgia Tech, according to the announcement from the National Merit Scholarship Corp. Georgia Institute of Technology is a state-supported institution located in Atlanta with a total enrollment of approximately 13,000 students, 3,500 are in graduate programs. Tech offers more than 25 different degree programs for undergraduates in Engineering, Science, Architecture, and Industrial Management. Most of these fields also offer the graduate degree. A Woodstock High School student received a $1,000 scholarship from a local company for her academic and community achievements. NeoCom Solutions, Inc., a Telecommunication Engineering & Construction firm, awarded a total of four $1,000 scholarships to students who have maintained good academic standing while juggling active schedules including community service, full course loads and extra curricular activities. The Charter Scholarship for the 2011-12 academic year was awarded to nine Cherokee County residents entering their freshmen year at the University of Georgia. The award provides $1,000 per year in addition to the HOPE Scholarship to Georgia high school graduates. Recipients are incoming first-year undergraduates with stellar academic records, leadership and community involvement and a respect for and commitment to intellectual, social and cultural diversity. Usually the top 6 to 8 percent of entering first-year students are named Charter Scholars.
