The Woodstock Public Safety Foundation has a slew of events lined up on Saturday to honor the men and women in blue.
Saturday will be packed with events Woodstock residents can do to recognize National Police Week. Along with its Hustle For Heroes 5K Run/Walk & Kid's Fun Run, the Woodstock Public Safety Foundation will hold its annual Police Memorial Service and Spring Festival. The run/walk is set for 7:30 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church of Woodstock. The Kids’ Fun Run will follow at 8:30 a.m. Runners and walkers will receive both a t-shirt and a water bottle. Award categories will include best overall male/female, Top Hero (Police/Fire/EMT), age groups. The Woodstock Public Safety Foundation's Hustle For Heroes 5K will raise money for various initiatives coordinated by the Woodstock Fire and Police Departments.
The Woodstock Public Safety Foundation will venture into the world of sponsoring races to raise money for its causes. The Hustle For Heroes 5K Run/Walk & Kid's Fun Run is set for 7:30 a.m. Saturday May 18 at First Baptist Church of Woodstock. The organization is sponsoring the event along with the Woodstock Fire and Police Department. The event will be held on the campus of the church and will benefit the foundation's programs such as Shop with a Hero, Emergency Services Assistance, Explorer Unit and several other programs. Registration is $25 for the 5K Run/Walk, $10 for the kids' fun run and $10 and $15 for fire, police and EMT personnel participating in the 5K run/walk. American Legion Post 316 of south Cherokee County recently recognized Woodstock Fire and Police public servants during the post's 94th birthday celebration.
Woodstock Fire and Police Department employees were honored on Thursday for their service to the community by Commander Irma Martin and American Legion Post 316. Honored were: Also honored were Boy Scouts William Stepat and Benjamin McKenzie for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. Time is winding down for residents to apply for the Spring 2013 Woodstock Citizens' Public Safety Academy. Thursday is the deadline to apply to participate in the free sessions, which will be hosted as a partnership between the Woodstock Police and Fire Departments. The sessions will be held every Thursday between March 28 and June 18 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Magnolia Hall (formerly the Woodstock Community Center). The academy offers a series of classes that will educate residents on several key aspects of both agencies. The Woodstock Fire Department will start its routine fire hydrant maintenance on Monday and will continue testing through April 30.
The Woodstock Fire Department will start its fire hydrant maintenance next week. The department will kick off the maintenance on Monday and the maintenance will run though April 30. Residents may notice some water discoloration that will be temporary. The discoloration won't harm people, but it could stain light-colored clothing. "The discoloration is the result of sediment that is always present in waterlines being stirred up during hydrant testing," according to a city press release. "As part of testing procedures, the Fire Department will flow each hydrant until the water is clear, however smaller water lines that lead to each house may still have cloudy water. The residents of the home were not home when the blaze started and no one was injured in the fire.
No injuries were sustained in a fire that occurred in southeast Cherokee County Thursday morning. Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services and the Woodstock Fire Department responded to the call shortly before 10:30 a.m. of a fire at a home at 108 Eubanks Court in Woodstock. Cherokee County dispatchers received one call from a neighbor who said they saw white smoke coming from the two-story home while a second caller noted they saw smoke coming from the roof of the home. By the time the first engine arrived on the scene, flames were visible from the structure. The five people inside the home escaped the blaze that allegedly started when a car caught on fire.
Five people were able to escape injury after a portion of a home caught fire early Friday morning. Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services and the Woodstock Fire Department both responded to the fire, which broke out shortly before 1 a.m. at 1024 Ashfern Walk, located off Bells Ferry Road near Hobgood Park. According to a press release from Cherokee Fire, a caller told Cherokee County E-911 that a vehicle located just inches from the house broke out in a fire. Minutes later, dispatchers were told the home's garage was on fire. By the time fire fighters arrived on the scene, about two-thirds of the home was on fire and heavy smoke could be seen coming from the house. City Council members and staff during its annual retreat discussed land, costs and staffing for a new fire station.
A third fire station is needed for the city of Woodstock, and leaders hope the excess land could come in the form of a donation. City officials mulled the need during its retreat earlier this month. Fire Chief Dave Soumas told the council getting land donated to the city could save between $500,000 and $750,000 in costs and speed up the process of building the station. The city could use Special Purpose Local Option Sales Taxes to build the new station, which most likely will be housed on the northern side of town. Soumas said he's eyeing "several" locations for the new fire station. The Ridgewalk area was identified by Insurance Service Office, or ISO, personnel as the prime location for the city's next fire station when they evaluated …
