The academy will offer classes to teach residents on the operations and responsibilities of both the Woodstock Fire and Police Departments.
Woodstock residents will soon be able to learn about both the inner workings of both the Woodstock Fire and Woodstock Police departments. Both agencies are now accepting applications for its Spring 2013 Public Safety Academy. The academy will be held every Thursday between March 28 and June 18. Sessions will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Magnolia Hall (formerly the Woodstock Community Center). The academy, which is free, will offer a series of classes "designed to enhance the citizen’s understanding of various aspects of both departments," according to a press release. It's also intended to strengthen the agencies' relationship with the citizens while showcasing their responsibilities and risks associated with their professions. …

Woodstock residents who want to learn how to defend themselves will be able to do so in March. The Woodstock Police Department will offer a free self-defence class to city residents from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday March 2 at Woodstock City Annex. The class is taught in a partnership with the National Self Defense Company. Space for the class limited and is filled on a first come, first serve basis. Students must be at least 14 years old to participate. Also, all participants are required to sign a waiver and youth participants are required to have a waiver signed by their parent or guardian. The team won fourth place in accident investigation at the annual Winterfest competition held in Gatlinburg, Tenn.
The Woodstock Police Department's Explorer Unit recently brought home accolades from the Southeast Regional Law Enforcement Conference. The unit placed fourth in accident investigation competition, which encompasses reporting, diagramming and investigating all the aspects of motor vehicle collisions. Eight explorers recently traveled to Gatlinburg, Tenn., in order to participate in the competition. While there, the Explorer Post competed against numerous other law enforcement explorer posts from across the region, covering several aspects of law enforcement. A routine traffic stop early Sunday morning morphed into a short vehicle pursuit through two jurisdictions and ended with the suspect crashing into a Woodstock police vehicle.
A routine traffic stop earlier this week turned into a police chase that ended with the suspect crashing into a Woodstock police vehicle. Wasim Ibn-Darriel Abdul Majeed, 24, of Roswell was arrested on Sunday and charged by the Cherokee Sheriff's Office with failure to maintain lane, speeding, failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, driving while unlicensed, theft by receiving a stolen vehicle and running a red light. He remains at the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center with a $78,500 bond. Advocates for marijuana law reform are calling on the state of Georgia to suspend the arrest and prosecution of marijuana possession cases, according to a recent release from Georgia Campaign for Access, Reform, & Education (Georgia CARE). The call comes after state prosecutors said they lack the resources to prosecute a backlog of child exploitation cases in a January press conference. In Georgia, possession of more than 28 grams of marijuana carries up to 10 years in state prison. Roswell Police deal with their share of marijuana cases on a daily basis. Chase Lovell Gates is being held at the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center for allegedly robbing Cherokee Bank in Woodstock.
An Acworth man has been arrested for allegedly robbing a Woodstock bank. Chase Lovell Gates, 27, of Acworth has been charged with allegedly robbing Cherokee Bank in Woodstock. Cherokee Sheriff's Office Spokesman Lt. Jay Baker said Gates is being held at the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center with a $16,700 bond. The department received the call from Cherokee County dispatchers around 11:45 a.m. Tuesday at the bank, located at 159 Woodstock Square Avenue. Employees at the bank told investigators that Gates entered the bank and allegedly demanded money, according to a press release from the Woodstock Police Department. The Woodstock Police Department needs the public to help them identify a woman who is wanted for forgery in the first degree. According to the Woodstock Police Department, the woman on Saturday Dec. 22 allegedly tried to pass a washed $5 bill with the appearance of a $100 bill at Ulta Cosmetics Investigators with the department's Criminal Investigations Unit asks anyone with information on who the woman is in the photo to call the department at (770) 592-6030.

If you party too hard on New Year's Eve in Woodstock, the police department's Operation Safe Ride will take you home for free.
For those who tend to overindulge to ring in the New Year, the Woodstock Police Department will offer you a way to get home safely. The department will conduct its Operation Safe Ride this year on New Year's Eve, Monday Dec. 31. The initiative, which is in its fifth year, provides residents who may be impaired or don't feel safe driving with free rides home from local bars and pubs. The department in its press release stipulates residents who need a ride that night must patronize an establishment in the Woodstock city limits and must live within a "reasonable" distance in the city.
