A last-second shot bounces off the rim to keep the Wolverines from overcoming Kennesaw Mountain at the Longhorn Shootout.
The Woodstock Wolverines played from behind just about the entire game at the Longhorn Classic at Kell High School on Monday. Midway through the fourth quarter Woodstock pulled even with Kennesaw Mountain and had a chance to win at the buzzer, but a layup bounced hard off the back of the rim as time expired, giving Kennesaw Mountain a 63-62 victory.

For the second time in three years, the Wolverines compile a losing record for the season.
Last year, at 11-18, Marietta snuck into the state tournament with the worst record of any AAAAA team that qualified for the big dance. This year, the Blue Devils outdid themselves. Behind 19 points from senior Rob Greer, Marietta outlasted Woodstock 64-58 on Wednesday in the Region 5-AAAAA quarterfinals. The Blue Devils, who now sit at 10-16, are in the tournament for the second straight year. Marietta coach Matt Lyons isn't embarrassed by his team's record, "Record-wise, we're not where we want to be by any means," Lyons said after the game. "But I was joking with the kids in practice and I told them, 'I believe we're the best 9-16 [now 10-16] team in the state and I truly believe that. Our record really could be flipped around [16-9] …
The Wolverines knocked off Cherokee to win their first state appearance in the program's 14-year history.
Woodstock girls coach Julie Crowe has been a part of the school’s basketball program for 13 of its 14 years in existence. Crowe is in her seventh season as the Woodstock head coach. Before that she spent six seasons as an assistant. But not once has she been a part of a state tournament game. That streak will now become a thing of the past as Woodstock beat Cherokee 58-44 in the first round of the Region 5-AAAAA tournament to earn its first-ever state tournament berth. “There’s a quote that I saw that I’ve been using the past couple of days,” Crowe said. “‘In order to get where you’ve never been, you’ve got to do what you’ve never done.’ It’s just one of those things where (our players) bought in. It’s a big time for them.” Brianna Lakes …

Walton (16-6, 9-1) has won six straight games and 11 of its last 12 and will be motivated to keep pace with Wheeler in the race for first place in region 5-AAAAA. Etowah lost the first meeting between the two teams, 70-51 on Jan. 18. Etowah’s strength is in its backcourt with point guard Austin Miramonti, but Walton will counteract that with its one-two punch of guards Karl Cochran and Lanerryl Esters-Johnson. Etowah will be the sixth seed in next week’s region tournament …

The boys completed the sweep at home after the girls won going away.
You might not think that a team that just won a game to raise its record to 6-16 overall and 2-8 in region play should be talking about making the state tournament. But that’s exactly the type of talk that Etowah’s 51-45 win over rival Woodstock on Tuesday evoked from head coach Don Hurlburt. As minute as the difference between 1-9 and 2-8 might seem, for Etowah that one win spans a vast mental chasm between being a state tournament longshot and potentially pulling one upset and crashing the state party. “This was important for seeding in the region tournament,” Hurlburt said. “If we’re the sixth seed and not the seventh seed, now these kids think, ‘You know what, we can win that one game in February and qualify for the state.’ So this was…

As teams jockey for position with regional tournaments just around the corner, every game matters.
Here is what to watch for at the Woodstock - Towne Lake Patch on Tuesday: Teams: Woodstock vs. Etowah When: 6 p.m. girls; 7:30 p.m boys Where: Etowah High School Girls Preview: The Etowah Lady Eagles (18-3, 8-1) sit atop the 5-AAAAA region standings and have won seven of their last eight games. Woodstock (10-9, 5-3) is in third place and is running out of time to gain ground on the Lady Eagles. With five games remaining on their schedule, the Lady Wolverines need a few wins, and some help from Etowah, if they want to move to the top of the standings. A win on Tuesday would be a good start. With only three games left on Etowah's schedule, all it has to do to win the region is win out. Boys Preview: Even though these teams take up two of the…

The Walton girls bested Woodstock into overtime while the boys fought to overcome Woodstock's lead.
Woodstock’s girls played a close game Friday at home against Walton, losing in overtime, 54-49. Woodstock quickly jumped out to an early lead thanks to a series of four straight 3-pointers in the second quarter. Up until that point it was a back-and-forth battle. Woodstock would keep that lead until the fourth quarter. With only a minute left in the game, Woodstock suddenly found itself down one, 40-39, but quickly took the lead back with a bucket with 30 seconds to play. Unfortunately for Woodstock, Walton hit a free throw with only seconds left, leveling the game at 41. The Lady Raiders scored the first six points in the overtime period, a lead they would never relinquish. Woodstock’s top scorer for the game was sophomore Makensie Block…

Both the boys and girls teams lost to the Warriors on the road.
The Woodstock Wolverines traveled to North Cobb Saturday to face two talented squads in a cross-regional matchup. Woodstock’s stars came to play but both teams fell short against the Warriors. The first quarter saw the Lady Wolverines keep pace with fourth-ranked North Cobb. Point guard Clara Young moved the ball well through the Lady Warriors’ stingy full-court press. On the defensive side, Woodstock forced North Cobb to take contested shots from the perimeter while they cleaned up the defensive rebounds and started their speedy transition game. The rest of the game belonged to North Cobb. Lady Warrior Kira Gordon started penetrating the lane making uncontested shots and stretching her team’s five-point lead to double digits. Woodstock …
