Barney's foster mom took a 3:30 a.m. call from a volunteer at Murray County Animal Shelter who said he had only about an hour before meeting his end. She said that when a volunteer makes that kind of call it means that a particular dog has been so special that he has worked his way into the hearts of both shelter workers and volunteers. Barney, aka Beagle Boy Sweetie, was precisely that dog. Volunteers have to work from a list of dozens of dogs each week. The mentality of a volunteer is to place as many dogs as possible and hope that their work was enough. To prevent the damaging effects of the inevitable loss of some animals, the goal is to focus on success and attempt to ignore the ones that didn't make it. Barney was one they could not…

Ava and Araceli are closely bonded due to losing their home, their owner, and siblings all in one day, so would do best being adopted together as a pair.

Ava and Araceli were surrendered through no fault of their own. When their 85-year-old owner was forced into a nursing home her family took her five beloved Chihuahuas to a kill shelter to be put to sleep. Luckily, someone saved these sweet girls and their brothers the very morning that was scheduled to happen. Araceli, who is seven-eight months old and about seven pounds of sheer joy and love, possesses a shining and gregarious personality! She loves to cuddle and insists on follow her person everywhere. She is a real survivor – facing death while battling a terrible bout of parvovirus. Then, just when her immune system was at its weakest, she developed a severe upper-respiratory infection that nearly took her life. After fighting …

Faith was discovered by a county animal control officer after she had been left in a house for more than a month without food or water. Her owner had been taken to a nursing home and Faith had been left behind. By the time she was rescued, poor Faith was extremely emaciated and barely able to walk. We soon discovered that the persistent food deprivation had left Faith almost skeleton-like, blind in one eye, and with poor balance. Her condition was so bad that euthanization was considered. However, she did not seem to be in any distress, wagged her tail quite a bit, and loved attention. Everyone who met her fell in love with her and thought she was very sweet. Faith received extensive vet care and then moved into her current foster home. …

Bonnie is a 5-year-old Lynx Point Siamese cat (that is a Siamese mixed with a tabby). When Bonnie showed up at animal control with a litter of four kittens her bones literally were sticking out of her skin. Angels Among Us Pet Rescue got her out and provided a safe place for Bonnie to tend her kittens. Unfortunately, Bonnie and her kittens were so weak and ill that her kittens all died soon after. Bonnie is still recuperating and trying to get some weight back on her bones. She needs a permanent home to settle into a quiet old age, just hanging around being sweet and doing nothing in particular. She is good with children, dogs, and other cats. For more information, please contact cats@angelsrescue.org. An Adoption Application for …

Amanda will need a fenced in back yard so that she can run and jump and play. She will also need four-legged siblings to play with. Amanda loves to play chase and she loves all kinds of dog toys. She is still a puppy, but seems to be pretty smart with her housebreaking. She sleeps in the human bed all night without making a sound. Applebees has a survivor's spirit and heart. She is so appreciative of being saved from starvation. She greets everyone she sees submissively with a wagging tail and when being petted will roll over for a belly rub. On June 4, 2012, Angels rescuers found her in an Applebees parking lot as they returned from a save at a nearby shelter. At first sight the rescuers thought she was a cat, but then realized she was a puppy alone in a parking lot on a six lane road. The rescuers called to her and Applebees ran and jumped in their car. Applebees was taken to the vet, found to be healthy, given her shots and the next day placed in a foster home. At the initial vet appointment Applebees was skin and bones at an emaciated 8.8 lbs. With two weeks of …
