Marble Exhibit Comes To Cherokee Museum

The Cherokee County History Museum will display a temporary exhibit chronicling the marble industry in Cherokee.

The Cherokee County Historical Society has announced plans to display a temporary exhibit on the marble industry in Cherokee and Pickens County. The exhibit will be on display at the Cherokee County History Museum and Visitors Center. Due to the large outcropping of marble found in Cherokee and Pickens counties, the marble industry flourished in North Georgia between the 1880's and the 1930's. The quarry in nearby Tate provided the unfinished product for the dozens of finishing plants in Ball Ground and Canton. The exhibit will feature photographs, documents and artifacts from the historical society's collection. A special profile on the prominent marble sculptor, James K. Watt, will also be on display.
