Tree Falls on Mobile Home, Traps 2 Children

Two children, ages 2 and 14, were pulled to safety after a tree fell on a mobile home early Saturday morning.

Two Cherokee County children are lucky to be alive after a tree landed on a mobile home early Saturday morning.

Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services and Woodstock Fire and Rescue both responded to a call in which a tree had fallen on a mobile home just before 8 a.m. at the Poplar Valley Mobile Home Park.

The park is located west of Woodstock off Highway 92.

Two girls, ages 2 and 14, were trapped by the tree, and firefighters were able to rescue the toddler "quickly," said Tim Cavender, spokesman for Cherokee fire. The child was transported to WellStar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta to be treated for minor injuries.

The teenager, however, didn't escape so easily. According to Cavender, the girl was lying on a bed when the tree crashed through the roof and fell across her lower back.

Part of the tree also had gone through the floor, so first responders had to stabilize the tree before they could start on the task of rescuing the teen.

The agency utilized an air bag to lift the tree off the 14-year-old, said Capt. Mike Malone. She was pulled to safety and transported to Children's at Egleston Pediatric Hospital in Atlanta in serious condition.
