Update: Shooter in Stolen Vehicle ID'd

A Woodstock police officer pulled over a man at Farm Ridge Drive and Canton Highway believed to be in a stolen vehicle, police say.

The man who shot himself has been identified as Joshua Richard Ganley, 27, of Northeast Cobb, The Marietta Daily Journal reports.

Ganley is recovering at in Marietta after surgery Friday morning, police spokeswoman Brittany Duncan told the MDJ.

The 2001 Nissan Frontier he was driving Thursday was stolen Tuesday from a house in the 3000 block of Bells Ferry Road in northern Cobb County, told the newspaper.

A man shot himself in a stolen vehicle around 1 p.m. when a Woodstock Police officer pulled him over.

An officer suspected the man to be in a stolen vehicle at Farm Ridge Drive and Canton Highway on the Cherokee and Cobb county border, said Brittany Duncan, spokeswoman for the .

"When the driver was asked to exit the vehicle, he reached for a gun and shot himself in the chest," Duncan said. "While being treated on scene, he was alert, conscious and transported to ."

The man is being charged with theft by receiving stolen property.

Duncan said his identity is not being released at this time.
