Woodstock Hosts National Night Out

The long-running national event has evolved over the years from an effort to take back crime-ridden neighborhoods to community-wide celebrations.

The Woodstock Police Department will host National Night Out tonight from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Park at City Center on Arnold Mill Road.

The Woodstock Night Out will include S.W.A.T. and K-9 demonstrations, rock climbing wall, helicopter viewing, bounce houses, and more activities for children of all ages.  Free food will be available and music provided by The Celebration Crew

Other agencies and organizations participating in the event include: Georgia State Patrol, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services, Holly Springs Police Department, Woodstock Fire Department, Cherokee Safe Kids, and Air Life 5.

This year is the 29th annual National Night Out.

Over those years the original ‘lights on’ and front porch vigils have expanded to include block parties, cookouts, parades, visits from police, festivals, neighborhood walks, safety fairs, contests, rallies and meetings.

National Night Out founder Matt A. Peskin began the event in an effort to heighten awareness and strengthen participation in local anticrime

“It’s a wonderful opportunity for communities nationwide to promote police-community partnerships, crime prevention, and neighborhood camaraderie," Peskin said when announcing this year's events. "While the one night is certainly not an answer to crime, drugs and violence, National Night Out does represent the kind of spirit, energy and determination that is helping to make many neighborhoods safer places throughout the year."
